High res-scanning of old photos: buy faster one OR have Costco / Sams employees do it?

The key to it is finding a high resolution scanner available to you... I pay $2 a roll for deloping and very hi-res scans for colour film work.

Dear all-

After the recent fires in California (one was only a mile from my parents house) my father is anxious about losing family mementos on Black & White and old fashion color prints. Unfortunately the original film rolls are nowhere to be found.

My father wants to have them to be high-resolution scanned then stored (in a safe place) in digital form, G-d forbid the house burns down. He complains the scanner at home is too slow for him and wonders if it is really worth purchasing a faster one, when he the employees at a store like Costco / Sams Club would to scan the collection.

Question (yes, there is a question): How did you find the quality of the employees scanning work (i.e. has any of it been rushed and sloppy)? Would you trust Costco or Sams Club employees with brittle family photo momentos?

Please advise & thanks

Personally I'd find a good photo studio that does scanning and restoration work. you'd pay a bit more, but you get MUCH better results. Besides, you're trying to save these photos, how stupid would you feel if they were lost or damaged at a giant store like costco?

Yep, that's what I am afraid of. Lost or damaged is the greatest concern, second to having to bring back the discs because they did a poor job scanning the photos.

Had my father not buy such a cheap slow scanner and was MORE patient, he could do the scanning more efficiently.

I work at Sams and I know with our machines they make you scan them yourself.
One hour labs aren't as bad as everyone makes them seem.
If they do offer to do them for you talk to the person a little bit first.
Sometimes they really don't give a shit about your stuff.
If you are really concerned about it though, take it to a pro.

You don't say how many he has to do. A family member had about 50 of them and took them to a local photo shop. They scanned the originals as is and then on another disk fixed them up quite nicely and made prints of all of them. They also packaged the originals to keep them from being damaged any worse than they were. She said the price was very reasonable but I never asked what that was. I am not familiar with the work of Sam's and Costco. When I have been there I have to pay for my camera supplies at that counter and it always seems so chaotic back there. I would be more comfortable doing it myself or having a privately owned professional shop when dealing with family heirloom photos.

Shelly-

All I can say is A LOT of photos- much more than 50. Thanks for your suggestions.

Ah now I see where you are at with this. I thought you meant a handful of vintage black and whites of great great grandparents type thing. That brings me to another option. My father sold the family home to my brother and with it came tons of stuff including the boxes of pictures that Dad never got around to putting in albums. My brother paid my nephew's girlfriend to scan them for him. She is responsible and made a little chunk of change. In doing so she could justify the extra time on the computer without her parents freakin that all she was doing was hanging on Myspace for hours. Maybe he knows a teenager who would like to made some extra cash.

Shellyl-

With the amount of crap my parents had trucked across the country and stored in their smaller house, I am surprised the foundation hasn't cracked.

Thanks for your suggestions. Problem is finding a reliable teenager, willing to fight Southern California traffic (provided he drives a car) and is able to afford the price of gas. There are VERY steep hills around where they live, which would be VERY difficult to bike up.

I had some 35mm negs scanned at costco a couple weeks ago ... freaking horrible. Colour sucked, not very high res, soft, and it cost me an extra $3 a roll.

I recently got a deal on a Nikon Coolscan IV ... awesome scanner, much better then flatbeds that sell for twice as much. You can get a used Coolscan IV on ebay for around $300 ... well worth it if you ask me.

That said, in my experience, no decent scanner will be fast. Mine takes about 10 minutes to scan a strip of four frames at high res.

I appreciate the offer but I don't think my father wants me to schlep these photos onto an airplane- given the number of bags airlines lose every-day (I have heard about 10,000). Plus an overweight bag results in air carrier surcharges

Thanks for offering your contrasting experience with scanned photos at Costco.

I rely on Consumer Reports evaluations of all equipment, but I will keep a lookout to see if they tested the Coolscan 4.

While I have the "patience of a saint" to do these types of tasks, my father does not. I need to bring him to reality in terms of the fastest scanning speeds.
