| | Angel Island Campout < on 9/30/2007 7:49 AM >
| | | So this is the thread to discuss the details of the Angel Island Camping Trip. Any questions, comments, thoughts, worries, weather reports, findings, etc, should be posted here. To start off, I've listed a few points below that have come to mind that should be answered before we leave. They get straight to the point, and also leave room to expand. If anyone has anything further to add, please do. The less we have to worry when we arrive, the more fun and relaxing trip it'll be. I'm also open for PM's should anyone have any direct questions about camping or survival.
1) What are the official dates for this trip? 2) We need to know who's coming (how many we should plan for), and what campsite we should reserve. 3) We'll need to know who doesn't have camping gear and needs to borrow some from people for the trip. 4) What food are we bringing/preparing for the weekend, and what complete meals should we make for the group (not hard or sophisticated)? Drinks will be your own responsibility. 5) How do we get there? Where should we meet? What time? 6) What does the park allow you to bring? Bikes, firewood, propane tanks, etc. 7) How much will this cost per person for camping only? -- How much for those who are helping provide the food?
Post! -R

| | | I am still interested in going though the only gear I own is a sleeping bag so therefore I may need to borrow some things, if anyone would be kind enough. As far as what we are/are not allowed to bring, http://www.angelisland.org says: Dogs (except service dogs) are not allowed on the island at any time. Roller skates, roller blades, skateboards, scooters, and wood fires are also prohibited. Provide your own charcoal for the barbecues on the island. Metal detectors, while allowed, are not recommended because digging or disturbing the soil or ground in the park is prohibited. A few small lockers are available for $1. They are located near the vending machines next to the bike rental kiosk in Ayala Cove. Tables, food lockers, running water, pit toilets, and a barbecue are located at each site. Bring charcoal or a stove as no wood fires are allowed. Raccoons are active on the island, making food locker storage very important.

| | | Yah! Oct 27, 28 is good for me. RailGuy88, thanks for taking the lead. We should all confirm ASAP so we know how many people and can make the reservations. Schedule for Saturday, 10/27/2007 Tiburon to Angel Island leaves @: 10:00 11:00 12:00 1:00 2:00 3:00 4:00 I think we should take the 11:00am out on Saturday morning. This should leave enough time for those more distant people to arrive. We don't necessarily have to all go as a group but it would be nice. Schedule for Sunday, 10/28/2007 Angel Island to Tiburon leaves Angel Island @: 10:20 11:20 12:20 1:20 2:20 3:20 4:20 Like I said, I've got lot's of camping gear. I can coordinate with RailGuy on the cooking gear needed. Then others could bring their own tents and we'll fill in where required. We do have to carry the gear though so we should be minimal but with comfort!

| | | I'm in! I have a bunch of gear, and we can bring some/all if needed. Somebody's going to have to help me carry it though! I have: (rough list) 1x 4 person tent. 5 person if we REALLY like each other 2x 2 burner propane camp stoves 1x propane lantern 1x Coleman 5 day cooler (HUGE) 3x folding camp chairs 1x box of dishes/pots/pans (it's heavy though...) - other misc. camping gear We do need to figure out how we're going to work out food and ferry costs. I think we need to get a confirmed list, and divide food and ticket/camping costs equally across the board. Another thought I had is that we really have no idea what security is going to be like on the island after hours, or how many other people will be camped out there. It could be totally vacant after the last ferry, or there could be ranger patrolling. What about maybe 2 of us (Ryan and I?) doing a scouting trip out there before the fact? Unless someone already knows, making this a totally moot point. Are we making this the west coast meet up? If so, shouldn't there be some notice of it outside of the Bay area private board? Maybe a thread without and location specifics detailing that you must PM for more info? Thats all i can think of for now... -Jeep

| | | well, i mean, it's possible to throw together a westcopex in that time. we already have the list of sites, but a lot of people who were supposed to plan some of hte sites are gone (davidE, etc). Also we've lost a lot of sites since that list. And others have closed up. So, in short, if someone else wants me to send them the list, so they can do their own research and visit sites to get a status update, then by all means. Otherwise, Angel island just by itself (and perhaps some Presidio/bunker fun) should be sufficient, I suppose(?) [last edit 10/2/2007 12:28 AM by tunnelbug - edited 1 times]

| | | In all honesty, it's too short of time to plan for WESTOPEX by the end of this month. We'll need to plan for an entire full two days worth of stuff, with a base camp preferably not on an island (ferry charges each way is costly). I'll work with TB, Freeside, and a few others on here to come up with a plan to stay and dates, but I would like to say that WESTOPEX should be next spring of 2008. Starting a Friday afternoon and ending Sunday evening. I have a few campgrounds in mind that we can use for groups, and know the campground parks very well in our area.
Back to this trip... Park Rangers always check the guests once more around 10pm. This is considered quiet time (lights out, no noise, etc), and officially when the campgrounds shut down for the evening. They make their rounds and leave within the hour. When they do leave, the only law enforcement that comes in overnight til 7am the next morning is the Sheriff's Dept, when responding to a 911 call on the grounds. There is always a 'Camp Host' that is responsible for maintaining the sites and restrooms, but they can't enforce the law. There are also 'locals' who frequent the campgrounds every season, and call it their second home. If they feel that their area or campground is being threatened or becomes loud at night, some do take the law into their own hands... this is when the 911 call is placed and your friendly Sheriff Dept comes out. Who get's arrested? Not the ones that were loud, but the 'locals' who started the fight and tried to take matters into their own hands. I Love Camping!! Can't wait! -R (edit: spelling) [last edit 10/2/2007 9:10 AM by RailGuy88 - edited 1 times]

| | | We'd better do it quick if we are. I'll go ahead and reserve one camp spot; I suggest, judging from the number of people interested, that we reserve two, so can someone else take up another reservation? That's IMHO! Thx! G2G! LOLZ! Give me about 10 min, and I'll tell you which campground I've chosen. I'll get one as close as possible to the "good stuff" --TB People... we're out of reservations for Saturday. We have to do this Friday. Is this OK with everyone? [last edit 10/10/2007 8:41 PM by tunnelbug - edited 1 times]

| | | The 27th is a definite No-Go. And the last ferry for Friday leaves at 1500. We are not goin to get a campground for a Saturday until late-Nov, early-Dec. If we want to do a week day, we could do that. Or a sunday. However, a Saturday would give us more chance of a rainy november/december weekend
