Oshawa's history buffs are inviting the public to join them in exploring the city's unique heritage sites as part of the annual Doors Open Oshawa event. "This year we've proclaimed it Doors Open week, because we've added new events during the week," said Rose Mary Mason, chairwoman of Heritage Oshawa. "Why stick to a weekend when you can do a whole week?" On Monday, Sept. 17, the public is invited to "Living Stones," a lecture and guided tour exploring the ancient history and symbolism of church architecture. This event takes place at 7:30 p.m. at the Church of Saint Peter, 1175 Cedar St. On Wednesday, Sept. 19, there will be a guided walk of the Simcoe Street North area, beginning at 6:30 p.m. Meet at the front gates of Parkwood Estate. In the event of rain, this tour will take place Thursday. The Doors Open weekend is Sept. 22 and 23, featuring 22 sites, including four new additions: Portraits by Goguen, Saint George the Great Martyr Ukrainian Catholic Church, Church of Saint Peter and Corporate Aircraft Restorations. Old favourites like Union Cemetery, Oshawa Valley Botanical Gardens, Camp X, Simcoe Street United Church and the Oshawa Guide House, are also on the list. "Oshawa has a lively and diverse history with so many beautifully built buildings," Ms. Mason said. Doors Open is a provincewide celebration of community heritage designed to make heritage accessible and create awareness about the history of our communities -- all free of charge. A commercial art gallery originally built as a residence in 1900, this building boasts a Mansard roof, ornate porch, dormer and cupola. It is one of only two Second Empire houses in Oshawa. - Saint George the Great Martyr Ukrainian Catholic Church, 597 Albert St. S. Built in 1955, the copper domes of this church rise above the city skyline, creating a landmark for travellers on the 401. - Church of Saint Peter, 1175 Cedar St. Although built in 1961, the Church of Saint Peter, a sanctuary in the heart of South Oshawa, houses Victorian and Art Nouveau artifacts as well as modern pieces. - Corporate Aircraft Restorations, 1156 Airport Blvd. This is a complete aircraft refurbishment centre located at the Oshawa Municipal Airport. It features a collection of airplanes in various styles of restoration, paint booth, fabric recovering and aircraft disassembly and reassembly areas. Camp X Tours part of Doors Open OSHAWA -- The author of "Inside Camp X" will be guiding free tours of the historic site next weekend, as part of the annual Doors Open Oshawa event. Lynn Philip Hodgson will be providing free walking tours of the grounds on Sept. 22 and 23 at 1 p.m Participants will learn the history behind Canada's top-secret Second World War school for spies and saboteurs, where 500 people were trained in the dark arts of "silent killing" and "ungentlemanly warfare." The tour will also include information about the men who brainstormed Camp X and how they went about building and staffing the camp. Camp X is located at Intrepid Park on Boundary Road. Here is this place where you have basically have a giant meeting hall of spies and what not gathering in a place that I bet the enemy couldn't find on a map. Also the author of the novels that the James Bond movies went to Camp X. The land was bought by British businessman William Stephenson, AKA The Man Called Intrepid. The area was chosen because of its proximity to the US, geographical features, and the ability of communications to reach Europe from the site. So true. I lived in Bowmanville for years and didn't know about Camp X or the German POW camp. It wasn't until I moved to London that I read about them. It's odd that just about everyone has heard about "The man from Intrepid" but not Camp X. On another note I love Doors Open. It allows me to take my 8 year old daughter into a lot of places she wouldn't otherwise get to see (although last year I took her to the Phoenix Night Club, a local meet-market in a renovated bank building 'caz I wanted her to see the basement vaults [that they now use as beer coolers] ... there was a lot of 'splainin to be done about the cages suspended from the ceiling afterwards lol). That's amazing, I'm definitely going to try and attend some of this stuff. I love historical buildings, and since we went into a fairly in-depth look at Camp X in my Canadian History class last year, I'm psyched for a chance to be able to see it.
