Those are absolutely stunning! The picture with the doll is really creepy. Thanks for sharing.

It's mostly Pripyat there, but awesome anyway.

I seem to recall this web site has been linked to before. But I could be wrong, there are so many of them now.

Perhaps this could be merged with the other Chernobyl thread/s?

I highly recommend the book: "Ablaze" It is a very good account of the events prior, during and the aftermath of the reactor meltdown/explosion.

please forgive my lack of knowledge on the subject but isn't that whole area VARY dangerous to be in, considering the residual radiation. I mean radiation isn't like asbestos. you can't just throw on an AO safety approved mask and hope for the best. Of course I could be wrong.

Chernobyl/Pripyat

Hey everyone - as an introduction to those that don't me,
I'm from the South forum, website is www.uetx.com

My wife is a native of Gomel, Belarus and we're planning on going over there for 3-4 weeks towards the end of the year (late Nov./early Dec.). We're going to fly into Kiev instead of Minsk so that we can take the Chernobyl/Pripyat tour.

Is there anybody near the area that would like to go with us? It'd be great to meet up with some European explorers and the more people that go, the cheaper it gets. For just the two of us, it's $200/ea, but with 5+ people the cost per person gets cut in half.

Cheers,
~vR

Although the chernobyl disaster occurred on April 26, 1986- more than 20 years ago, people will not be able to inhabit the area for another 2980 years. Those photos were taken within the 30 km exclusion zone that was set up after reactor #4 melted down and exploded during a routine test. There are about 200-500 older farmers who returned to their homes after the initial evacuation who said they would rather live out the rest of their lives at their homes. They seem to be surviving without too many complications, however their homes and fields are more towards the outskirts of the zone.

It is safe to visit most of the areas within the zone, but only for a few hours at a time. There are several companies that actually provide tours. If you are not a scientist, these tours are the only way into the zone, which is guarded by the Ukranian military.

When "In the zone," you can only walk on paved surfaces, because the asphalt doesn't absorb radiation, however plants and earth even a few feet off the pavement have levels 3-5 times higher than that on the road because the plants and trees absorb radiation like a sponge.

The city of Pripyat is 2 km north of the reactor, it is mostly safe to walk there, however several buildings and in particular, the amusement park in the part of the city closest to the reactor are emmiting 3-5 rems per hour. Inside the shabby sarcophagus that covers the remains of the reactor, sections in the basement are throwing 10,000 rems per hour. 600-1000 rems is a lethal dose. Employees working on the sarcophagus can spare no more than a 15 minuet shift per day.

The only legal way. A Finnish explorer visited the exclusion zone recently (last year, if I recall correctly) without taking a tour, by hitchhiking, bribing etc. It's possible, but if you get caught, you'll really hope you had taken the tour.

Is it safe? Well my testicles haven't shrivelled up and my hair hasn't fallen out. Just don't step on the moss or go licking the dodgem cars and you should be fine.

If he was talking about Pripyat then yes he should have!! lol The moss and dodgems have absorbed more than the average amount of radiation .... along with the Red Forest.

Not treading on the moss was something we were all told when out there as it can easily be taken out of the zone on the bottom of your shoes.

Radioactivity is not always that dangerous, it depends on the duration you are exposed and the power of the radiation. Your body can take some higher levels for some time but this has a limit of course, the longer you stay the more risk you have to get a radiation related illness. that's how it works. Very high levels could kill you very fast of course, in a 10.000rem basement you wouldn't survive for 10 minutes.

A 1000 days of sorrow can disapear in a split second, it takes only one person to make it happen.

We had to be checked on a smaller machine before eating in the zone and when we were leaving the 30km checkpoint we had to go through a bigger version.
