Anyone here been down to the Bartonville asylum? I am planning on taking a road trip down there in about 2 weeks but was wondering if anyone could tell me the status of the location... if it's still there and worth my time (as it is about a 3 hour drive). Also, does anyone remember the name of the towm/village in central/southern illinois that is no longer on the map as it was incorporated into other towns. I think it starts with a C. Vague, I know, but thought it might ring a bell with someone. Thanks!

Is that place even still standing?

From what I've heard, not much is left and what is left is either sealed and/or boring. Keep in mind that this information is from a conversation I had with a friend back in 2004.

When I lived in Peoria way back when I never really thought much of the place. Just another empty shell.

Thanks NV. I was starting to wonder about that. I found some videos of the place on Google and it doesn't look like much. A cool building, but probably not worth the time or gas money. I think I'll wait until I find more stuff down in the Peoria area. I didn't know you used to live there.

I grew up in E. Peoria and moved to Chicago in 1989. I rarely visit Peoria now and when I do it's without a car, so I have no idea what's there to explore.

Wasn't Bartonville on eBay? Wonder if it ever sold?

I drove by once, sealed well.

All I remember was that the local cops will arrest you for walking on the property. I remember this being an issue on the "CUE Ladies Weekend" a few years back.

Hi all,

I'm writing from Peoria, IL.. Bartonville is just west of Peoria if you follow the Illinois river. Should be the first town out.

In the past I have explored the hospital, but I have to agree with the other posters (based on a recent drive-by visit) that there really isn't much to see anymore.

All of the out-buildings have been either torn down or renovated into the Bartonville Industrial Park. The main building is still there as you may see in photos. If you're in town, it might be worth the drive to maybe pull the car over and walk around and look at it ... but it is pretty heavily patrolled so if you try to get in... you'll have an escort out.

Now... back in the day.. (mid 90's was the last time I was in there, the next time we went, it was boarded and guarded) there were tunnels all over the place -- we would pop up in the oddest places, such as the outbuildings, a coal access door, a manhole cover... We went back to take some friends the next year (after a college summer break) and it was all changed.

To answer the original question... No.. not worth the drive. If it was, though, I'd offer to come along.

Thanks for the update! I'm about 2-3 hrs away so I wanted to find out before I wasted my day. I'm all about get out and finding things out for myself, but not with that distance, the price of gas, and a navigator. =) Anything else good out that way? I just made it to Gary over the weekend and that was fun. Made it into a school, only to be greated by a camera and a *buzz buzz buzz* when entering the hallway. Whether or not it just buzzed or actually notified someone, I don't know, but we walked all the way back around the school and sat in the car for a bit and didn't see anyone. So, maybe next time.
