"It's a mighty rough road from Lynchburg to Danville"

I recently went through Danville near the NC/VA border, and found the Dan River Fabric Co. Factory (a massive structure) and quite a few abandoned warehouses. As a courtesy, and because of time, I didn't go farther than the gates (which someone had rammed through) but it looks worth investigating. Luckily I had my camera. Anyone have any history on the place?

Where was the 4th pic taken? I haven't seen that area... The complex is really big enough that you can explore for 2 days and still not see it all.

That is my Dan River Fabrics Gallery. It's also in the LDB but for full members only.

unfortunately i lack full database capabilities, but your gallery is very good, nice to see both sides factory and the inside. To me, the divided factory and walkway was the most interesting thing about the plant.

the 4th picture was taken in the tobacco warehouse district, the place was empty, but roads went all through it, small abandoned warehouses galore.

i was there for a motorcycle race, but when i drove past Danville and saw the sign, i knew i had to stop by and see the area, curiosity took over. I only had about 2 hours in the town, so i couldn't go inside. I think i might come by sometime later, and try to perhaps legally get in somehow.

I doubt you'll be able to get in legally. Be aware that the mill on the north side of the river is being demolished slowly from the inside. The south mill is intact as far as I know and it does still have power. I'm not sure if it's alarmed or not though. Which gate was rammed through?

I figured the 4th pic wasn't at Dan River Fabrics. Lots of the old warehouses are now active again. That photo actually looks like the big mill (or whatever it is) that is alongside the railroad tracks near Business 29.

this is the gate that was rammed in, right off of the MLK bridge, obviously by a pickup truck, no doubt, someone looking for a thrill. from what i saw, there was another abandoned factory farther down the road, i only saw it from afar thought.

Ahh, yeah that gate has been open for as long as I can remember.

FWIW the only open access to the south mill is through the north mill across that bridge, which isn't in the best shape.

Near Greensboro about 30-45 minutes from Danville.

You're right about Danville being cool. Most of the big industry there has packed up and left (Tobacco and Textiles). When you drive around town Dan River Company is all over everything, and it's all just about abandoned.

i noticed that, nearly everywhere i looked Dan Fabrics was stamped in some way or another, it kind of seemed like the industry in the town was centered around the company, and when they moved the factory to India, things fall apart.

from what i gather, there is another empty factory farther down the river, about 2 miles from downtown.

btw, i am in the Triad area as well.

I usually cut through a section of VA near Danville to fill up with gas before heading back down to Raleigh. This looks like a great location for some exterior shots, but if its where I think I imagine getting inside would be difficult. I'll definitely stop by next time and take a look around.

I become capability. I become the horror. What we know we can become only in our heart of darkness. It's my gift. It's my curse.

Without saying too much, it's definitely not hard to get inside the place.
