I was down in the mid-atlantic region on vacation. I didn't originally plan on doing any exploring, but had some free time so I did. Did the usual preliminary location research / google mapping. One of the UER locals (don't know if he wants his name mentioned or not) was very helpful and answered a few additional questions I had to fill in the rest of the specifics. Went on a scouting run as well.

Anyway, the main area used to be a 1700 acre military base which was used as a staging area for troops deploying overseas during WWII. According to the historical placard, the base was active from Dec 1942 - Jan 1945, and processed almost 1.5 million troops through it's gates. Not much remains of the huge sprawling base. Only an errant fire hydrant sticking up out of the ground here and there. I saw a few bricks / foundations, but the area is extremely overgrown this time of year, and you really have to look hard. However, the back corner of the base was used as a Nike Missile / Radar site, and several of the structures are still intact, along with the towers. This area was very overgrown too. Bug/tick spray and be extra vigilant of the forest around you. I actually got the sh*t scared out of me and jumped / ran back about 20 feet. I was walking underneath a row of low hanging tree branches and literally a foot in front of me, a huge (had to be at least 4 ft) black snake drops from a limb right above my head and hissed at me as it hit the ground and slithered into the woods!

been there 2 times and my bro and his friends even played paintball there. i've heard of police showing up and handcuffing people for being there. its been at least 2 years, when i went there was standing water all around and one spot, about 6-7 feet away from the road, the water was deeper than any branch i shoved down into it. nice pics tho i missed the ladder when i was there, nice.

Lol, I wonder! Definitely! I'll have to specifically set aside some time for exploring next time I'm in the area.

Yea, while I was scouting the day before, I saw two of the trailer park locals being handcuffed and arrested by one of the road entrances (beer bottles scattered all over the place). Needless to say, I didn't go in that way.

As you know, the interconnected roads of the base are long, but since they're completely straight, anyone passing on the main road has a clear view all the way down. I opted for a nice long bushwhacking expedition in the blazing heat. I covered myself w/ Off! Deep Woods (sweat resistant 30% Deet) and just used my GPS to navigate to the location, using the roads sparingly. Fun times!
