I'm from Warren, but things are pretty scarce there. The best place used to be the old waterworks on Summit St., but it was mostly torn down a few years back. And it's pretty level now, so it's very easy to be seen. Although, there is a tunnel near the railroad tracks there that, I assume, ran power lines or something. I never got the chance to go back an explore it.

I'm moving back to Warren for a month or so before taking the big trek out to the Seattle area, so I'll try to get out and about and see if there's anything worth the time.

It's astonishing how much trouble one can get oneself into, if one works at it. And astonishing how much trouble one can get oneself out of, if one simply assumes that everything will, somehow or other, work out for the best.

I'm thinking of driving down to Youngstown as well sometime soon. On Google Maps I can see some large old industrial locations that I'm hoping are abandoned.

I was in Youngstown this afternoon, found an abandoned school that's still pretty well kept up, you can literally waltz right into it. Actually thought I was going to go in the old Youngstown Sheet and Tube building near the mills, but it's now occupied by a chair company and about a million chairs. A couple of young dudes let me in to take some pics. On top of my list for Warren is St. Mary's middle school, and the Westinghouse plant--I don't know the story on Westinghouse (couldn't make it by today) but St. Mary's is locked and not visible means of entry exist, I may call the realtor when I get back up there. But, don't be down on Y-town/Warren, there is tons of stuff, you just have to drive around a bit.

St. Mary's on Elm Rd? Man, I'd love to check that place out. I used to live in the neighborhood on Porter St. when it was still open as a school.

I just remembered that the old St. Joesph hospital still has alot of empty space. I don't know how much empty space anymore, as I haven't been there in years. But I got permission from the janitor to wander around the unoccupied places as part of a 'school project'. I really wanted to find the morgue, but I never did. The laundry room was quite creepy, however.

I have a few less-than-stellar pics on my webspace, however.

My oldest sister's first apt. was on Porter street. I went to St. Mary's back in the 70s/80s; the locker rooms were creepy then, I can't imagine what they are like now. Anyway, I went up a fire escape and peeked my head in--labs are incredible, and there is plenty of really good furniture in there. That's why I may contact the realtor, I would like one of the teacher's desks. I was wondering about St. Joe's, it's open for some business? What's in there? I went to find Woodside in Youngstown, but really couldn't confirm I located it. You should really tool around Youngstown and go down 169 from Warren to Niles, I bet there is cool stuff to be seen.

St. Joes is, technically open for businesses. There's alot of places renting out space in there, but last time I was there (early 2000's) there was still alot of empty, abandoned space. Mostly on the second and third floors. You can generally just waltz in the front door and look around for the janitor's office (which I think is down the main hallway and the first left, there's a door a little farther down on the left that had a sign last I was there). The guy was cool with me last time, I just made up some sort about a school project and he said to go ahead, as there's not much to get injured or hurt by left anywhere.

Yeah, I really only peeked in St. Mary's when school was out, on the weekends. We used to like climbing the fire escapes and us kids called the parking lots back there The Back Parking Lot, it's where almost everyone from the street hung out.

The only places I usually hit on 169 is the cemetaries. I imagine some of the better places to explore are closer to Niles. I generally stay away from most of the neighborhoods (mostly the Burton, St. area) in Warren on 169. Plus, they closed off Thomas Rd. (that runs by the cemetaries, right off of 169) because they kept finding bodies back there.

I know, in Niles, that Garfield elementary school is now abandoned. I worked there as a janitor the last two years it was open. The basement is kinda creepy, but it's got a neat layout. I don't know if they left anything there, or if they gutted it.

The high school in Niles is closed now, as well, since they built a new one. But I don't know if there's security or anything like that. I've never been in there at all.

Right outside of Youngstown theres a really really cool abandoned Holiday Inn. In Austinville(?) I think? I was just there a couple weeks ago.

I felt unsafe going into abandoned places in Youngstown. I found a cool abandoned bar by a McDonalds there. But I'll pass on venturing into abandoned places in murdertown, USA.

Yeah, pretty much. That's the big reason I avoid Youngstown. I'd like to check out Idora Park (what's left of it, at least), but the chances of getting shot kinda makes me avoid it.

Youngstown is a gold mine for abandonments. a quick drive through it and I found a large abandoned school, a huge abandoned factory, and at least one other potential site near downtown. Drive around the industrial areas and you're bound to find something. Very depressing, but amazing in its state of decay and many vacant lots.

I want to be different. But I want to be different just like everybody else, because if I really were different, everybody would think I was crazy and weird.

Yeah, I love Youngstown, although the PD are not to pleased about me or my car. The only reason I wasn't hauled away was because some 81 year old shot himself in the face by accident.

Wow, if this is not satire you truly are the epitome of a pansy ass white suburban ignoranus. After having trespassed in the roughest neighbourhoods of Chicago, Gary, Flint, Detroit, Youngstown, Pittsburgh, Braddock, McKeesport, Philadelphia, Camden, Buffalo, Niagara Falls, Cleveland and East Cleveland I have yet to be mugged, threatened or murdered.

Yeah, if you aren't stupid there's no reason why you can't go through some rough places. Respect the people who live there, and avoid the ones who appear to be bad. Not that hard. Youngstown isn't that bad, the industrial areas still have industry around them, so if that's what you're into, don't worry too much about being murdered, someone would probably report your death in a timely manner. Kidding, but seriously, it's not THAT bad.

thanks! See you on hobogan! Just driving through Youngstown made me say "wow.. This place looks really cool"

and thats all I thought the entire time I was there. Nothing more, not scared, nothing. Not until I got back did my friend inform me of how notorious it is for its crime and murder rate.

I was born and raised and Homestead.

Looks like myself and a couple friends (max) might be in Youngstown this coming weekend. Anyone around and want to meet up for a site or two?
