Portland OR: Factory Ham

Factory Ham is named after a misheard Dead Kennedy's Lyric (You're nothing but a FACTORY HAM!). It's a huge factory complex with two warehouses, two small buildings, a number of foundation outcroppings two abandoned piers and, the crown jewel, an abandoned shipping crane off the shore out in the willamette river.

it's a really public site with almost no security. people ride thier bikes and walk thier dogs through the complex pretty regularly. There's an active rail line that runs through the middle of the property and occasionally empty cars are sided there. It was at factory ham that i learned the joy of jumping from train car to train car.

This is a really popular tagging site and there's some pretty good work up. despite all the empty cans, i've never actually seen anyone painting there and i've hung out there a lot.

i recommend going underneath the piers. There's a bunch of steel cat walking and you can climb around in the tar poling above the water.

Bring drumsticks, theres lots of cool stuff to drum on.

How exactly do you get down there? That place looks incredible. It looks like its north of dowtown getting closer to that rail-only bridge. On the NoPo side of the river, but I could be totally wrong.

Yeah, that bridge you speak of is the Columbia Draw. I'm going to figure this out when I up that way later for work this week.

The crane used to be closer to the dock and you could get on it, but obviously they moved it away to prevent people from doing this...

-

The easiest way to get there is to head out to the Portland University campus.

Take North Lombard Street either from I5 or St Johns and turn south on North Portsmouth Avenue or North Van Houten Avenue.

On Portsmouth Ave follow it till the end of the U of P campus and it will go into a Z shaped curved road down to the bank of the willamete and the east end of the crane site, but closer to the factory.

On North Van Houten Ave just follow it to the end and you can either take a right onto North Van Houten Place which will take you right to the west end of the crane site or you can take a left onto North McCosh Street which will dump you at the edge of the U of P campus and you can just turn right and follow the Z shape curve down the factory site.

OR just find the U of P campus on Google Maps or Windows Live and find a route to the site yourself...

Yeah, it's pretty easy to get to. Atomic and Noah and I got there just by finding stoner photos on Flickr and driving over. Too bad the skate park was gone by then. We met some dodgy fellow who had misplaced his cell phone and drugs while "getting intimate in the bushes" or something... wierd.

Did you check out the wierd hobo sex shrine in the basement alcove?

Turns out I might not make it out there unless I can find housing O_O

I've gotta find a place before mid-September or I'm boned. I finally got accepted, but then found out that on campus housing is full, and the big apartment plexes in the area are all full up. Anyone looking to rent out a room near the PSU campus?

Heh, I used to know to the owner of one of those apartment buildings before he sold it.

Craigslist for that area is pretty easy to get at.

Yeah, Craigslist is where I've been looking, it seems to have a much better community than other regions.

Well, I made it! I even managed to get moved in and acquire all the necessities of life without major incident. Anyone feel like showing a newbie to the city some of the abandoned sights?

I live within a mile of this place, I go down there just to ride around and explore. Last time I was there, a ship was docked with the big crane. I thought that was weird. Everytime I go I see people walking around with their dogs or whatever. I got some sweet pics as well, check em out...

I need some new Portland area spots! I found one I have been itching to explore. There is an huge abandoned plywood plant on the Washington side of the Columbia, out towards Stevenson. It is on the right side of 14. I'll try to find out some more info on ways to get in...

I went on a little walkabout on my way to get some stuff from Fred Meyer, and found a rather cryptic, and gigantic, building.

http://maps.google...5021&t=h&z=18&om=1

It's massive, bay doors along both of the longer sides, and wide as the whole block with a parking lot as big as the building itself and half again. There are cars parked outside in the satellite image, but when I went there the entire property was completely deserted. There are no signs or markers to indicate what its purpose is. Anybody have a clue as to what's in there?

I'd love to check out the plywood plant if you feel like having some company. Unfortunately I'm carless for the foreseeable future, so that could complicate my exploring efforts.
