| | | does anyone have any suggestions for what i could use to measure distance in a drain? i was thinking if there is something like a tape measure that uses a laser beam instead of tape, that would probably do the trick. 1)does such a thing exist 2) would it work underground in hazy environments? 3) any suggestions on what kind to get?

actually yes it does exist.. I would contact your local City Surveyor and they will have a Laser distance measurer for you all ready to go.. heres a pic of one near my house I found... it was in a surveyor store..
you can google the name brand and look up prices.. I remember they went from about $200 <cnd> for the cheap ones to about $500 <again cnd> for the awesome ones.. still prices will vary.. as for hazy environments.. well they use a laser.. if its REALLY REALLY hazy it'll bounce off the cloud.. take you chances is all I can tell you

| | | I use a really long string marked off every 10 feet (my friend marked it off, and forgot to do every meter, gonna fix that soon.) The only problem with string is that it stretches more when wet, so take that in to account when you're marking it off.

| | | I believe Sears Craftsman has a similar thing, albeit with a much more dumbed-down display and interface. I remember this contractor at my dad's house using something like this to measure distances between walls. I may be wrong though. Been a while since I heard/saw anything about such a thing.

if you use something like a static line (2 mil), being wet shouldnt cause it to stretch significantly

| | | You can also get "tape measures" that work via ultrasound, that wouldn't be affected by haze. I'm not sure how well it work work in, say, a tunnel that curved though.

yeah, figured i'd rule that out considering tunnels are narrow and very echo-ie, and ultrasound would probably bounce all over the place? i failed physics in highschool though, so maybe i'm wrong?

| | | You can buy a cheap ghetto one that is adequate for your purpose at Harbor Freight so this is probably a good idea.

come to think of it how hard is it to make one with a circumference that is something that rounds out <eg. 1 meter or 1 foot> and maybe something that clicks.. and if you are still feeling creative how about something that will add up the times it goes around!!! that ought to be super cheap

| | | just use rough estimates..... there are lots of locations that list the total distance but 99% of these are guestimates....a rough idea is enough, try measuring the time it takes which is a much more useful measurement in a lot of cases

| | | If you just want to measure distance, and have some idea where the drain goes, it's easy enough to scale things off using a map. Google Earth works well for this too.

| | | it's hard to measure travel time when you are picking over rocks in the dark - velocity is random and unpredictable. (in the particular case i am thinking of) as far as distances using a map, that is the problem, this place is of unknown depth, length, and there are no visual clues above ground. the rolly wheel thing probably wouldn't work down there either (because of the rocks) The string idea is pretty good sounding to me. as long as i can find some non-stretchy stuff. | | | In that case, try picking up a cheap pedometer. They'll usually convert steps to distance.

| | | AVE... Use chain instead of string. Buy cheap, small chain, it always have the same length. Use climbing rope. Water don't affect it. Even string will do it. Of course if you don't need too much precise value.

| | | That was what u was going to recommend, but what ever you do don't use a laser. It is too good to be true. My Dad went to set up one of our cranes and the guy said he had plenty of room for it, but they couldn't set it up, because they could not lay out all the boom sections. The guy was like "I measured it" My Dad asked him with what he replied "With a laser" The guy was off a couple hundred feet, so if you use one make sure it works first, when you get it in the store.
