| | Have you ever gotten in trouble UEing? < on 7/7/2007 6:50 AM >
| | | I am deciding whether or not I should get into this hobby, it looks really fun. But because of a wild past I can't really be getting brought home by the police a lot, so I was wondering, have any of you guys been caught and gotten in trouble during your adventures?
Some girls should just be happy they were invited to the prom.. |

Not where we live... people just get busted doing stupid shit. Like, um, running drunk through highway tunnels. If you don't do that, you should be safe as a trespasser can be.

| | | If you've got the desire/need to explore, then be smart and careful and you probably won't be taken home by the cops. Maybe I'm an optimist, but I believe that even if you get caught, you can talk your way out of most situations, provided you're ONLY trespassing, and not vandalizing or breaking and entering. That said, trespassing is a crime in virtually every jurisdiction in the world, I assume. One (unrelated) arrest fifteen years ago was enough to scare me into abiding by most laws, but that doesn't keep me from exploring.

| | | It is my experience that as long as you have a camera, no B&E paraphenalia, and don't act like an ass to the cops, they'll usually just tell you to leave.

| | | It comes with the hobby. Trespassing (or anything illegal for that matter) is risky. Like zippy said though, if you don't look suspicious, have B&E tools, and don't talk back to the cops, you should be just fine. Good luck!

| | | The closest I've ever been to being in trouble was when someone saw me opening a manhole, and they called the cops who came out, went in (we were hanging around at the entrance discussing the merits of crawling through a 40cm RCP) and pulled us out. They just took our names, made sure we hadn't damaged anything, advised us to be more careful not to be seen when opening manholes, and sent us on our way. As long as you aren't an asshole to the cops, and you play smart, you'll be fine.

I totally agree with that. I was caught once walking around a bunch of abandoned apartments on a crappy side of town. We were pretty dumb and inexpirenced about it. Yeah, we dropped an axe and a baseball bat in some tall grass that we were carrying to avoid any kind of weapons charges. eek But the police officers thought we were there for drugs - since i'm a girl, they couldn't search me. That's good because i had picked up an eviction notice inside an apartment complex. Moral of the story is: be smart, don't be a jerk to cops. We just got a 'report' written about us. i haven't heard anything about it yet.

| | | Now I'm thinking about ways to achieve that girl-bonus too...mhhhh..... edit: to add to the discussion: a friend once stepped on a flower pot in an empty house which made a noise louder than anyone would expect, there was someone on the street yelling that he was going to call the cops and we had to come out, but as soon as I showed up at the window with my camera and tripod visible, he apologized and explained he didnt want the house to get more broken by some dumb kids... I think I wrote that somewhere else? Anyways it probably depends a lot on the people you meet, cop or just someone else, and on how you act [last edit 7/11/2007 11:37 PM by Hirnduebel - edited 2 times]

How does that work?
I always have a camera and a damn good cover story. A student ID from a local college helps too.

well they were male cops. At least in my area, that means that they can't search me(a female) unless they call up a female cop. I had the whole college, camera business too. I guess they just didn't bother since we were nice 'well to do' suburban kids, and they could search the other 2 boys i was with. They even checked through their wallets to see if they had any significant amount of cash to 'buy drugs with'.

| | | Basically if you play "dumb" you shouldnt get into any trouble. What I do generally is say that Im going in to take pictures, etc (testing out a new camera, etc) and dont break crap. if you go in spraying up a place or breaking stuff you will get busted. I was in PHSH this weekend and saw a group of kids smashing stuff in the storehouse area, thats totally the way to get caught. Also if you're with a friend, make sure you have the stories straight, consistency rules, the moment your stories dont cross, both get busted. Dont be paranoid either, just go with the flow, worry less explore more!

| | | It's all about the 11th Commandment, kids! DON'T GET CAUGHT
Quite simply to answer the question, however; Yes I have been caught. I was with a group who were less than subtle and security nabbed us. As Trespassing isn't a criminal offence in the UK, we were just escorted out of the grounds. The police do get called however on occasion and I have even been chased by a security guard with a golf club. Lovely.
The 11th Commandment: Don't get caught! |
