Abandoned houses, yes or no?
< on 6/27/2007 8:54 PM >

i've heard quite a bit on this forum about people not being interested in abandoned houses. maybe its the lack of options in my area or just my interest in homes. the only non-residental places i've been in this area is the purina factory and the army base near patrick henry (that i can remember right now). i have been in many houses around my area. i like the one on the road to beaver dam park in gloucester, where i live. a lot of times its like the people just leave all there stuff and bolt. in this particular house there were records and checks (written out!) all over the floor. one thing that was neat is that the fireplace had fallen off the house leaving a giant hole in both the upstairs and down. let me know what ya think.

sorry, no pics, re-did hard drive with out thinking of all my pics.

Some abandoned houses are fun, some aren't. It depends on the size and content of the house.

Personally, I like an abandoned house as much as something big like a mill or factory. Most houses have little fragments of the former residents that I find interesting--photos, books, Christmas cards, etc. I guess I'm nosy, but I love looking at stuff like that. I like a location which someone had a personal attachment to as much as an industrial site. I think that sometimes houses don't afford as many offers for great photography as something like a hospital or industrial site, but then photography isn't the only reason I explore. So there's my babbling two cents.

I <3 archaic industry.

sometimes houses can be just as fun as any other place..and other times they can be kinda worthless..say a house abandoned from a fire compared to one just forgotten about with nothing left in it..

I still wanna check out those houses and church near Tappahannock, I'm sure an abandoned church would be pretty sweet. I've never noticed an abandoned house on Roaring Springs Rd. Is it in plain view?

Houses are alright... I've posted a couple to the database that I thought were interesting. Normally I like to explore factories or mills, but when you don't have abandoned ones around you, you have to settle for less.

I honestly don't see why this is even under question. If it interests you, why not check it out? At most it'd take fifteen minutes of your time. Personally, I feel that houses can be even more fulfilling than factories or prisons, simply due to the attachment that is placed upon them. God forbid you let some website dictate what you do or do not do.

If you do try an abandoned house, make sure it's really abandoned. It could just be a bunch of rednecks or illegal immigrants living in it.

I explored two houses today and had a great time.

Listen, explore what you like.

I've had the pleasure twice of thinking a house was abandoned and it wasn't. I stay away from houses for the most part now.

I enjoy a good house myself. It's very important to make sure they're really abandoned though, as already said. I spotted a place that looked worthwhile only to find a car hidden behind the overgrown yard and someone living in the dump. But yeah, houses can be a lot of fun.

its down a chained off dirt road in the woods, if going towards beaver damn its on the right. i usually park in the overflow parking and walk there, bout 1/4 mile.

every one is right, you should explore what interests you, i was just trying to see what everyone thought. also if anyone had any good ones in this area. i'd like people to name a few, maybe some pics.

What you enjoy exploring should be your own personal opinion; not that of others. I think the thing with "abandoned" houses is what has already been said in this forum; they are not always abandoned. Or sometimes they will even be "booby-trapped" by some crackheads or squatters.

I personally don't care much for mills and factories, which is what a lot of people like to explore. Maybe its because we have more mills and factories per square capita than convenience stores!

In general I enjoy exploring locations I would otherwise never get to see - i.e. asylums, military bases, prisons, power plants, steel mills, factories etc... The fact that I have been inside a house nearly every day for the last 26 years sort of takes the interest out of it.
