Saw this and thought of you all. It's interesting in that it's a overview of the whole abandonment of Gary, IN.

Enjoy:

Yes, it is one of the most extreme cases of urban abandonment in the US I would have thought. A modern day "Wild West" ghost town if you will. In common with the western ghost towns, it really is a city which outlived it's usefulness, but in this case there seems to be a sense that simply because it is a city, it should and could be revived.

My feeling is that they should make the effort to start returning the land to nature if we humans have no use for it (except us urbexers of course!)

Cheers

wow, just wow. You've obviously never been there. I guess the 100,000 people that live and work there should just give up and leave.

I'm not following here. What do you mean, "a ghost town" ? Are you even talking about the same place?

i guess, technically, certain parts are "ghost town-ish" but, not really.

in case no one's ever ventured out that way - check it out...my husband has been auditing a steel mill out there and we drive around there and explore once in a while.

I know more about blood than you

I'm talking about the place that is in the photographs. And it is indeed a ghost town. Certainly, living humans don't walk those streets. There may be 100,000 people technically living in Gary, but those people clearly have no use for those parts of the city depicted in those photos.

And therefore those parts should be returned to use by nature itself.

Cheers

Yea, you have never been there...

Living humans walk the streets, all over the city!

Who are those people down there then? Vampires? Don't think so.

That link didn't work for me, but gary is definitely still active. The buildings are run down, but there are plenty of people out and about in those areas.

I really enjoyed visiting Gary's abandonedments, but it's by no means a "ghost town".

I can't get the link to work

The personal responsibility train left the station years ago, and you gave it the finger as you watched it leave.

After driving past it on several occasions, I still want to go visit. I just lack a combination of time, money, and a good UE-buddy to make sure that we both don't get murdered.

Yeah, that made me chuckle a bit too.

The cops that came into the old post office for us, the last time we were there, made it seem like I was effing retarded for going into an abandonment. Tried to ruffle my feathers by making veiled threats involving crackheads gangbanging my wife and her friend, so far those two cops are the only downside to gary that i've encountered.

Murdered? Not likely.
Entertained? Absolutely.

Leo1: You cant just wander around Gary going into old buildings! Theres plenty of crackheads that will bust you in the mouth for that camera, then run a train your ladyfriends.
Me: I like Gary, I think its nice, aside from the lack of eats on a Sunday afternoon.
Leo2: Yeah, its really nice...until we find three dead strangers in an...abandoned...thing.

To Live And Die In G.I. Baby!!!!

Since Gary has become a tourist attraction, I would be more afraid of the creepy urbex noobs you are going to run into! Especially if they are into live action role playing games!!

I find it hard to be intimidated by a place that was gleefully sung about in a Broadway musical!

I smoked Marlboro reds for 20 years, I don't need no stinkin respirator!
