I'm not trying to be an ass but as opposed to what? These buildings are so massive that there isn't exactly a lot of uses and the cost of retrofitting them is enormous. Leaving them to fall in on themselves just doesn’t make good sense regardless of how much fun they are to explore. Plus as long as someone has been building someone has come behind them and destroyed. It was pretty common practice in ancient times to take apart someone’s pyramid or temple and use those building materials to build your own pyramid or temple.

i'm what you call a 'flipper' i restore old home and buildings to their original beauty and maybe their original function. of course this building would not be turned back into a hospital due to the building codes and the fact that another one is not needed. But there are so many things that could be done with this building, even if they just keep the administration building... a museum, a court house, a hotel are just a few examples. history should never be torn down because it looks deteriorated and 'useless' because something can always be done to bring it back to life so don't give up hope on this building.

Went to the pre-auction inspection meeting:

http://img47.image...287r204219asa4.jpg
I arrived at the front steps of the Weston Hospital at around five till 10:00. I’d say there was about 100 people total there. My best guess is that 80-85 of them were former or current employees and just curious people wanting to look around or take photos, and about 10-15 people there were actually serious about purchasing the property. After a brief introduction (where the DHHR people stressed their main goal was to preserve the hospital), those who chose to climbed into about 4 vans and proceeded to tour the farm portion of the property which consists of appx. 308 acres.

I always felt that taking tours was a cheaters way of doing UE but with a place like this you have to take what you can get and you kinda struck gold. Im jealous of you and this opprotunity you had.

Don't get me wrong the way to see Weston is definitely a "self-guided tour". I took this deal because I'm interested in the whole selling process. You can't see a building like this unless you're spending half a day there.

With the auction tomorrow, and my profile to finally clear, I'll tell you a small tale, with a large amount of detail.

I being a young adult grown up on the internet generation, I had many friends in different states, I myself hailing from Ohio, I found a young man in Weston who turned out to be a great friend. On my last vacation, I got to meet him, and have an exclusive preview of this property.

As he was showing me around the exterior of the building, telling me stories his dad had told him. Weston the town itself is filled with people who used to be employed in the facility. He told tails of crazed men who burned portions of the building, the paint ball challenge upstairs, and the sinking of the building.

As we come around the rear of the building, near the excluded court yards, a security guard crosses our path. "There is Good News, and Bad News." He called out to us.
"Well, what is the Bad News?" My friend Inquired.
"You're not supposed to be back here."
A brief pause followed this.
"Well then, whats the good news?"
"We don't really care if you are." He said taking a key and unlocking the door in front of us. "Come on in and check it out."
Overwhelmed with Tourism Glee, I run in and start to snap as many pictures as I can get. As we go to the second story, the guard asks us if we know anyone with the physical description of my mother, informing him that it was her, he goes downstairs to let her in. At this point, my friend and I make a break for the nearest area that looks like we shouldn't be there. We passed through the halls of standing water, The wards on the second floor weren't as bad as the ones on the third, nothing too paranormal occurred. Just an eerie feeling of decay. The walls in some part were decomposing, the floor was covered in a few inches of dust and particles. All the paint was peeling.
After we were informed of the massive amounts of asbestos and lead, I was a little worried, but people die for lesser reasons.
The security guard who assisted us also used to work at the facility when it was open, so he too had a few stories to tell.
Now with this property starting around one Million dollars in bidding, It can only be a concerning factor that the cooperation or committee who receives this land may also fall under, and such a property would be returned to the state.
We'll see how tight security gets when the media gets out on this one, and the new ownership is established.

PS- If you're interested on more buildings of it's type, I recommend Kirkbride Buildings, and if you'd like to know more on 1850's ideal mental facilities, check out Kirkbride's book, On the Construction, Organization and General Arrangements of Hospitals for the Insane
Many of his buildings have intriguing stories to tell, just as Weston's.

BREAKING NEWS- THE KIRKBRIDE WILL BE SAVED!!!

Going once, going twice, sold, the Weston State Hospital has a new owner today.

The auction lasted only eight minutes, and Morgantown man Joe Jordan bought the 306.84 surface acres for $1.5 million.

The asbestos and demolition contractor says, he'll meet with Weston City Council Members and Lewis County Commissioners to talk about a game plan for the property.

Right now the state doesn't have a time limit on when they'll accept the bid, but they plan to review it.

If they accept, Jordan will have to come up with a $10,000 down payment, and within five days give the rest of the money.

He says, he doesn't know what's in store yet, but he does know he's keeping the main building in-tact.

I know Joe. I hope that's true. It's very good media relations to say this, then in a year proclaim your estimates were wrong and the place can't be saved. We'll see!

I drove down today just to be there for the auction, I ran into an influential woman while I was down there, I reported to her what I had heard on the radio, they claimed it was going to be turned into a casino, but she scoffed at the idea, and said from the ideas Joe was tossing around, no such event would take place. We'll see.
It seems smart for a contractor of his type to take interest in the building, you've already got your renovation task force on hand. We'll see what happens.

In my opinion Jordan probably made out ok. If you asked me he knows very well exactly what the abatement will entail. I'd say he's planning on selling the adjacent property to someone that doesn't want the responsibility of the hospital complex, then he'll demo everything but the Kirk, which he'll abate and then "flip" to another buyer.

The title transfer has been approved, Jordan now owns it outright.

He's planning to start stabilizing the main building ASAP, patching the roof and shoring up the cracked beams in the clock tower.

He's also planning to fence off the entire property and alarm EVERY building. I don't know if people will be welcome on the grounds anymore or not- the news didn't say.

Looks like I'll wait until after abatement to check it out.

Sigh.
