We made a brief stop at the boiler house before continuing into the main (Kirkbride) building.

We started in the lobby area and made a brief stop in the auditorium before continuing on to the 4th floor. We walked down the entire (female) ward and back. We were told that towards the end this area housed social worker offices and not patients. It is interesting to point out that quite a few people on the tour reminisced about their time working in the various areas we had toured and that most, if not all had not seen their former workplaces since the hospital closed 13 years ago. After exiting the main building we walked up the hill to the Forensics/Criminology building which housed court ordered patients and the criminally insane.

Next stop was one of the two medical buildings. The first was erected in 1954 to hold additional patients from the main building.

The second was the true medical building of the facility. This is where the lobotomy’s etc. took place. One the first floor we passed by the EEG room and an Oral Surgery room before coming across the morgue.

This was the final stop of the tour as the TB wing was in too bad of shape to enter and the two small canteens were not included in the tour. After all of this there was a question and answer session back on the front steps. I did not stay for the entire Q&A. While I was on the tour I did try to mingle with everyone and try to get an idea out of potential buyers what their plans for the property were. From most accounts there seems to be a strong interest in developing the farm portion of the property into either mixed-housing (condo, townhouse, and patio house) or a retirement community. There was one man there representing a firm out of Maryland who said Weston is in a perfect location due to it’s proximity to Washington D.C., Pittsburgh, and I79. As for the hospital complex it seemed to be agreed upon across the board that all of the buildings, except the Kirkbride, would be torn down and that at some future point once profits were made with the rest of the property something would be done to the Kirkbride. Another common ground for most buyers was that save for piping insulation there did not seem to be an abundance of asbestos in the building as most off the floors are wooden and tile was sparsely used. Sadly everyone agreed that the property would be exponentially more attractive to buy if only the state had spent the money to keep the roof fixed while the hospital was closed. Thirteen years and a leaky roof can be quite damaging to any building. Regardless of the leaks and such I did leave the meeting with a feeling of hope. I didn’t run into anyone that didn’t have intentions of saving the Kirkbride at the very least. If anyone had other intentions they didn’t make them public. On an ending note, as I left, I overheard an interesting conversation; “I know quite a few people that want to come to the auction just to try to make the first bid so they can say that they started the whole thing off or were trying to bid on the hospital” said one guy. “Well tell them to be careful, the first bid on this place could very well also be the last” was the reply of another man in the crowd.

Middlefork River in front of Weston State Hospital (this is where the sandstone for the Kirkbride was quarried).

That they were.
It was definitely pretty nice to be escorted around by 'the man' Though I think we started pissing off the little tough guy guard when we were always the last ones out of the buildings

I wish I'd known about this... I would have been there. Should have been paying more attention, I guess. Turd and Face, I'm glad you made it.

Did they let you up in the clocktower? The clock was actually working until about a year ago.

Nah, it was a pretty rushed tour and there was a freaking heard of about 80 or more people. I let them all go up the stairs first because I felt rather unsafe on old wooden stairs when 80 other people were on them too. It was a freaking circus to put it nicely. I did manage to slip away with another explorer and one of the nicer guards on one of the floors in the kirk. He let us explore the floor further than the rest of the group was allowed and he even gave us some info and history. It was worth the trip 100%

Here are some pics I took of the tour group

Here is Mr. Power Trip security guard. I would not want to run unto him if i was here without permission.

Nobody's allowed in the clock tower anymore. The beams holding it up are starting to split, and it's in dire need of attention.

Here's a map I threw together of the grounds:

I really really hope I won't have to start painting them red like they did piece by piece on the famous Danvers map.

Nobody's allowed.

Go ahead, try it without permission. BTW it's a good idea to go ahead and withdraw that bail money in advance if you're attempting this.

My buddy was in the clock tower this past weekend. And your # 14 was the halfway house for alcoholics, AKA the convalescent ward. There is still a steam tunnel running the length of the foundation into the greenhouse basement, but as Oherian can tell you it's blocked off leading to the rest of the hospital complex.

lol Most definitely. Not to mention partially flooded. I remember that as a slightly frustrating, but overall enjoyable, experience. We didn't make it in, but not for lack of trying.

I tried to make convo with mr though guy security guard to try and get some info out of him about security. The only thing I really got was that he said they do regularly parole the interior of the kirk.

He was definitely on a power trip that day since he had the keys to the kingdom. And every time that they asked the group if they wanted to see the inside of a building and pretty much the only people that raised their hands were us explorers, I think he was getting pissed

If you are here non-legit, watch for this guy. You are sure to be going to the local police station if he catches you.

Which conveniently happens to be caddycorner from the hospital property. He gives the alarm and the cops will be there in seconds.
