Fort Carroll, Maryland. It's an abandoned fort in the middle of the Patapsco River just south of the I-695 bridge. To get there, you have to kayak there from Fort Armistead Park in Baltimore City, and you need to be careful kayaking, since you are crossing an entrance to one of the busiest ports in the U.S. The Fort is right after the shipping channel, and there is a dock on the eastern side of the fort (shaped like a hexagon). Once you get in, it is very interesting. You will find all sorts of military artifacts dating back to WWII and WWI. Now it is left abandoned by the US Army since 1958, when it was sold to a wealthy Baltimore lawyer for $5 Million. Thankfully, development plans never materialized since he died shortly thereafter. It has become a de facto bird sanctuary now, but nobody, not even the Maryland DNR goes there. Any person interested in abandoned forts should go to Fort Carroll. (In addition to Fort Delaware, on Pea Patch Island in the Delaware River, near Wilmington.)

The dock is no longer usable. Getting on it now is kind tricky and you will prolly get wet

Not to mention the water in the Patapsco is polluted with everything Baltimore discards. But anyways, I always wear a bathing suit or wetsuit when kayaking to combat this problem. I'm also a good climber, so getting onto the island should be no problem once I tie my kayak down, if I am able to tie it.

Ft. Delaware is not abandoned. They do tours. The whole fort has been rebuilt anyway... not too interesting; IMO.

Ft. DuPont is an abandoned fort that is a stones throw from Ft. Delaware.. and that one has some hidden gems.

IF you've got a plane you can, but you'll get hung up in the trees.

I didn't know it was called Ft. Carroll. That place is awesome. I just read up on it, interesting history. I went there a few years ago, in a regular motor boat. There was still a pier then. Lots of birds nests and I remember there being lots of peach trees. The walls of the fort were super thick. It was a lot of fun I'd like to go back some day.
