STC's new home in DC (not totally thrilling, fair warning)

So last week one of my coworkers took me on a tour of the new Harman Center for the Arts in DC, where The Shakespeare Theatre Company will be moving into in October. It's right across the street from the Verizon Center. I snapped a few pictures of the new theatre in progress (with my cellphone, no less); I therefore apologize for the low quality, but if anyone around here was slightly interested in what was going on in that building, here's a bit about it:

The Load Rail
Here's the midrail for loading the fly system...and all the new weight blocks, whee!

The House
A view of the audience from the stage floor. Seating will be around 720, I believe.

The Trap Room
This is the wall of the trap under the stage. I was told that these signatures were of people who donated to the project early on - however, if you look closely under November 9th, 2005, you can see that "Stupid" signed as well. Glad to know Stupid is such a patron of the arts.

The Balcony
Top of the balcony, looking out. And the lone audience seat.

More about the project
The theatre itself is physically isolated from the rest of the building, the help buffer the outside sound as well as for building solidarity. The lobby balconies as well as the building above it are actually separated by a thin space from the theatre itself. If you go there once it's open, you can see a thin separation between the burnt sienna walls on the outside of the theatre and rest of the lobby balcony. Kinda cool feature, and will probably be helpful with the noise from all the traffic, the fire station across the street, and any Verizon Center events.
Technically speaking, the theatre is as about as well equiped as I've seen lately...plenty of power for lighting, automation, and more. Needs more elevators though...I can tell work calls are gonna be a bitch with 5 flights of stairs from the trap to the grid.
There's a space in front of the stage similar to an orchestra pit that can either be used for floor seating, or can be a smaller "front stage" area for traveling acts. Apparently, the idea is that the company can have a mainstage event set up on the stage proper, but also allow rentals to do smaller performances during the afternoons and dark days without having to disrupt the set or light plot for the mainstage.
The old bank building that's surrounding the new space is still in STC's possession, and is currently only being used for shop/construction space. I actually wish I could have gotten into that part since it's more of the old stuff, but I didn't get any farther than the stairwell. I'll be keeping my camera on me for future work calls just in case we do go back sometime this summer.

(As for security and getting in without a tour guide, don't even think about it. It's locked up very well, and armed heavily.)

Is this the same company that runs the Folger Shakespeare Library across from the Supreme Court? If so, I'd like to get to the old Shakespeare theater once it shuts.

No, however STC and Folger used to be the same company...STC broke off from them maybe 10 years ago I believe? Anyways, the STC's current home is the Lansburgh theatre on 6th street, but it will still be in use though after the new space opens.
