Hey there. Just wondering if anybody's been inside the drain system in Newmarket lately. I've never been myself but will soon. I've -heard- it gets HUGE inside.

I grew up in Newmarket in the early 1970's and spent quite a bit of time riding my bicycle around underground back then. Look around the Main Street/London road area on the east side of the RR tracks for a back breaker that runs up to Yonge street, its an easy bike ride but a back breaker if walking. There was another one that I remember being at the end of Waratah (sp?) out in the bush, but this area may ba developed into houses now. The largest one I can recall was in the park behind Fairmeade/ Mazo schools. Its an underground holding tank about the size of a football field. There are numerous connections throughout the area to it that are explorable. Bare in mind this was thirty years ago and these systems may be gone now or significantly changed or my mind may have misplaced them.

Wow Mutt, thanks for the info! Checked out the drain earlier. Getting in was no problem, but the water levels past the overflow were a bit high. I walked in a bit further past the first bend but didn't really see anything interesting. Would have gone further had my friend had a better pair of boots. Gonna go back when his lazy ass gets a pair or when the water's a bit lower. Looks real promising. Can't wait to find this holding tank

We went up behind the school but couldn't find a decent entrance (at least one we could use without a crowbar)

I could only imagine how intense it would have been to ride a bike through these tunnels, maybe I'll try it when it's a bit dryer.

I recently found an entrance into a drain in my hometown of Holland Landing, just south of Newmarket. It is behind one of my friends houses and runs directly into a small basin fed by natural springs. I'm going to check it out soon and will post pics.

Isn't Holland Landing North of Newmarket?

After the death of Ray Twinney there was a large political uprising in the Newmarket area. Followers of each political faction wanted changes made.

One political group, sadly underfunded, wanted to move Bradford to the lands just east of the Leslie Road - 404 interchange. Another wanted the Gap between Aurora and Kettleby widened because the people o0f Kettleby were afraid that the standard of living has dropped in the area since the expansion of Aurora.

The only group to successfully lobby change for Holland Landing were the Sunny South Sweathogs. They were able to get enough support and finances to shift the whole village southwards to the space between Newmarket and Aurora.

Good Job guys.

checked out the drain behind my friend's place. It just goes on in a straight line for what seems like forever, and being three feet tall, it's hell on the back. I'm gonna scoot through it on a skateboard one of these days but I really don't think I'll find much.

I found out something cool yesterday. In 2012, (I might have the year a bit off) Holland Landing is being put on town sewers. I'll for sure check those out a couple times before they get flooded with shit.

Also, anyone know where I can get my mitts on a copy of the blueprints/plans for the Newmarket drain system?

Well... We did some major exploring and scouting today. Found 3+ new drains to check out (some recently built) and we got us some better boots (just look at them purdy waders.)
We checked at the end of Waratah and did find a drain, but we couldn't find any decent outfalls. We found a manhole covered with a large rectangular grate, but once we looked inside we saw that the passage underneath is much too small for someone to squeeze through. It led down a small hill into a creek in the bush. I wonder if perhaps there is another larger outfall further down the creek...

Went as far as we could in the first drain I showed yas. The water kept rushing faster and faster until we got to a small slide, and then a waterfall. We climbed up the ladder to reach the top level, but found that there was a 3-4 foot or so gap over the small waterfall that prevented us going further. Next time we go we're going to rig up a couple 2x4s so we can get across. I really have to find myself a decent light too. Can't see shit all to frame my photos, then the flash buckles everything lol.

After this little adventure, we headed over to Sacred Heart/Mazo schools on Mutt's tip. Needless to say we found what we were looking for. (might not be the same as what he mentioned, but we still found a badass drain)

We weren't able to gain entry at this time, so we followed the drain (in one of its multiple directions from the "cage") aboveground until we came to a major street. Across the street we found this.

Need I even say anything?

We kept walking in the same direction and came to a drainage pond with... wow another outfall that splits off in two directions. Looks like we got some fun ahead of us... Hehe if anyone feels like joining us the next time we head out, send me a message.

Check Bradford, across from No Frills.

We must also go out and meet the enemy before he reaches our shores. We must defeat him before he attacks us, before our cities are laid to waste.

Are all of these backbreakers, or are they standing height? Hard to tell, aside from the shot with your lovely chest waders.

Nice finds regardless. Newmarket, the Mississauga of the future.

yep.

Most of the drains we checked out were backbreakers. The first one (the one we've been in the most) opens up to standing hight after the first big turn. It turns into a backbreaker again after the waterfall. When we looked through the "cage" at Mazo, we could see two 8 foot plus pipes going off in opposite directions. The uncovered manhole in the last picture is the only way in that we know so far.

Turns out the "easily accessed" manhole in the last pic leads to nowhere. We checked out the other one we found but it seemed to be an endless backbreaker. Ah well. We'll be getting into the system under Mazo soon.
