Missouri--St. Louis--A Park--A Cave

Anyone from St. Louis...I was in Tower Grove Park with a fellow UE-er, just taking a walk...and we came across an opening beside a tree. It was cold, we dropped some rocks in and they hit a little bit of water . There was a large stone over it, and when we lifted it (it was not pleasant, lots of cave crickets and mosquitos and spiders) it opened down to a man-made tunnel about 2 ft. wide by 4 ft. tall. the walls were just stacked stones, but most of the ground was dry so I don't think it was a drainage ditch...plus, a very large tree had grown over it. Any clues about tunnels under tower grove?

I've never heard of anything, but I'll have to check it out. Did you drop down and follow it?

Not yet--it was early evening and no flashlights. As far as we could tell, it kept going. I assume we'll go back and I'll let you know how it goes.

i have heard something about old mine shafts under certain parts of south city. mostly coal mine shafts from like the late-mid to late 19th century. does anyone know if maybe any of these shafts may connect or have entries or exits under tower grove anywhere?

if you know, let us know.

Yeah, I'm drawing a blank on that one. I know that there were supposedly many clay mines on the north side of the city, especially under the Hill and Dogtown sections. This doesn't sound like one of those, though.

Sounds interesting. I live only about a mile from Tower Grove Park, perhaps I'll try to find this.

Please do! Give a holler if you'd like to check it out. It's a strange place. The cave crickets and mosquitos are somewhat dense, so come prepared for lots of insects.

It is a big park... I went cave hunting there last weekend with no luck. I might have to look you up next time I'm in town.

It definitely could be a mine.

It didn't smell like a sewer did it? It does sound kind of small for a tunnel that's intended to be walked through. Still, definitely going to have to walk Tower Grove this weekend.

Well, we checked this out yesterday, and amazingly, we found it in about 5 minutes. Tower Grove park is a pretty big park, I figure we'd search for hours and never find it!

But anyway, we lifted the rock up and there's about a 2' deep by 1' wide cut limestone trough. In one direction it goes on further than my light can shine, in the other it turns into a appx. 18" RCP about 6' away.

It's a really old storm drain.

We walked around the park a bit and found some other, much larger storm drains. We didn't go into them as the grates were in large, open, highly visible areas and there would have been no one to close the grate behind us. We found a round brick walking height drain, and another cut limestone tunnel about 6' high and 30" wide.

Yay
Glad to have sparked a little exploration...yes it IS a hard place to be stealthy and safe at the same time. For anyone in town or hunting around St. Louis, my cell is (can I post it here?) is 419.957.4730
don't give it to telemarketers s'il vous plait.

We like the tower grove, soulard, riverfront areas best.
