Navy Atlantic Broadcasting Station

So a few friends and I decided to check out this place in Suffolk, apparently a broadcasting station used by the navy in WWII. I actually found the place based on a tip in a post by the wrangler, and a little google earth-ing later I found the place. It's a really neat place, so much that we haven't explored yet due to the fact that we never seem to have a flashlight, and some parts of the building are really creepy. It seems that there are 2 floors, along with an attic and a basement, but all we have been able to get to have been the basement, the first floor (ground floor, I guess) and the roof. You can get about 20 feet in before there is a doorway with pitch black beyond it...no one has gone in yet. The basement is pretty sweet with a huge air treatment system, some generators, and a snow owl, which flew straight at us. If anyone wants directions or to meet up over there sometime then I'm all for it, just pm me or something. Here are some pics of it, the first few pics are mine shot with just a point and shoot camera, but the rest are taken by my friend with a Digital Rebel.

PS. I'm pretty new here, so I guess this is my introduction haha

Nice, location looks fairly BA. And dont worry about the pictures, better than anything I can shoot. Do you know who owns the property now?

The property is owned by the city and there have been plans to turn it into a park for a wile but they havent done anything in like 2 years. The police do there motorcycle training in the building by the street and they also wash there cars there kinda weird always cops up front. I did a DB on this place a while ago its pretty fun. Did you go all the way down by the water?

Haha, after about 5 minutes of arguing how far it really was down to the water, we started walking. About 10 minutes later we got down there and pretty much everyone agreed it wasn't worth the walk (it was like 90 degrees outside). I always wanted to go over to the little building in the far left corner of the complex, but after the disappointing waterfront we decided not to. Have you gone past the door into the dark room? Hopefully next time I go I'll bring another flashlight...and some people who aren't scared of the dark.

Also, yesterday afternoon I went to the dog food factory, and that place is amazing. Definitely worth the 2 bucks it took to get across the bridge. We didn't go into the silo building cause it was too late and we would not have been able to see inside, but we went into some of the other buildings and they were sweet. Next time I go I'll definitely head into that building.

yea when you become a full member you will be able to see pics of all that stuff in the db I did. I have been all over those grounds the building on the far left was a microwave tower thats a cool building very small but its all copper on the inside as far as the main building goes I have been in every room in there you just gotta watch for owls Im not joking if you get within about 20 feet of a nest they will attack and it isnt pretty they go straight for your eyes heres a pic of one that tried to kill me last time I was there.

haha, when we went into the basement an owl came flying straight for us. We were pretty much all in the doorway, so the owl was at least within a foot of our heads, probably closer. That freaked us out for a while. Then there's the rusty gate somewhere on the grounds...all you hear is it creaking then slamming shut. My friends and I waited at least 10 minutes before deciding it was the wind.

Just thought I would throw up some pics I took today. First time ever urbexing and I was pretty paranoid about my car getting jacked/towed. Where do you guys park? I just parked in the ball field but it was pretty open, if someone could PM me with a better location that would be awesome.

Anyway, pictures:

The facility is the former Naval Radio Station (Transmit) Driver, aka "NAVRADSTA(T) DRIVER", if you wanna sound really cool. It was mostly a High Frequency (aka short-wave) and Low Frequency transmitter site that was controlled by the Navy's Communications Area Master Station Atlantic (CAMSLANT) near Norfolk.

This NAVRADSTA was built on the grounds of a WW-II era Naval Auxilliary Air Station Monogram I assume in the 1950s, and should have been shut-down/abandoned in the mid to late 1990s.

I was there in the late 1980s and have photos which I'll get scanned & added to the DB. When I was there in the late '80s or so, there were still some old wooden buildings from the NAAS days intact.

It's possible that Suffolk hasn't built the park there because of environmental concerns & cleanup costs & liability from the site's military use.

Hey, good to see some more people going to this place, It's an amazing site. I always park at the baseball field too, then go around the fence and through the brush field to the road leading to it. I want to go again some day, apparently there are a bunch of rooms I have yet to go in.

Chris, i just moved in beside the dog factory, the police are not comming by once a night on friday and saturday. people are working there on friday and saturdays (sometimes on sundays) running businesses....becomming a restricted site and quite dangerous....the owner was out chasing someone off with his handgun by shooing at buildings hear the perp. i did find out that he's tearing down the store, the warehouse and the office building. he plans to keep the silo's and the quonzet huts. he's exploring what business options he
has at his disposal.............he still wont tell me where he lives, but i'm guessing

Seriously, if anybody is planning to go out and explore this place let me know and I'll join in. I really want to check it out, but I don't want to explore alone and I don't really have any friends who are interested in UE.
