Dissapointing hunt.

I went scouting around yesterday for a couple hours and discovered that there's a lot of rebuilding in the city. I've known St. Louis is on the upswing so this wasn't a surprise. Stuff is getting rented out to businesses, old buildings being converted into lofts, etc... it's great for the city, but made for a disappointing search for UEable locations.

I visited a place near the new stadium and found no way in. Then the Lemp Brewery complex, which is almost entirely in use. There's another brewery near Gravois and I-55, but I couldn't check it out because there were a lot of police around at the time. Then I went down to the riverfront, starting about a mile south of the Arch. I found a flood wall that went on for miles, covered with graffiti, some of which was very well done. I should have taken some pictures. But I didn't find anything that looked vacant.

I'm expecting responses like "you didn't look hard enough." That's fine... this kills free time at work.

And one thing - does anybody around here do drains?

You didn't look hard enough!!
Seriously though, that is the problem, so much stuff is here today and gone tomorrow.
Did you cross the river and visit Illinois? East St. Louis is here today and will be there tomorrow.

Yep, I know

About E. St. Louis, I'm aware there's lots of stuff over there. The problem is getting others to go. Everybody I know avoids that area like the plague. I don't personally have any feelings about it one way or another, so I'd go... but I don't explore alone, so I'll have to see who I can talk into it.

Thanks for mentioning it though, the east side was filed in dusty corner of my mind.

Why not go alone? I've greatly enjoyed my solo jaunts thru ESTL. If any of the locals ask, just tell em that UER sent you.

I'd go to ESTL only in the middle of the day. I know someone who used to buy coke from over there, he's made it clear that if you open the wrong door you can get shot in the face. This was some 10 or more years ago, but that kind of shit still goes down occasionally.

Once when I went to ESTL alone I was taking pictures of a church and a guy walked up and asked if I wanted to buy a radio. I said 'no' and he walked away. oh man, it was so horrible. I thought I would never get back to the safety of home.

Dude... I live in St. Louis, not East St. Louis. My side of the river holds the media's title of "Most dangerous city in the country", look it up with a news search! It's so bad that I dodge bullets every time I leave the house, in a Matrix-esque fashion!

So... really... it's nothing like that. Day to day living is perfectly fine, most of the time, and usually the problems come to people who ask for them. At least on the south side. I've caught myself making fun of people who are finicky about coming down to my part of town. I realize the dangers are mostly in one's mind, but... it would be stupid to assume you'll never find yourself in a bad situation in a place you're both unfamiliar with AND have heard horror stories about.

So until I'm comfortable I'd rather err on the side of caution. And BTW, just outside my place, people have tried to sell me a weed whacker, cocaine, dinner plates, a lawnmower, a blowjob, etc....

Yeah, because black people give you the aids just by looking at you.

I guess your going to be telling me that I should not be asking Highland Park residents about locations at one in the morning too.

There are plenty of place to explore in an around St. Louis, it just really takes some looking because they're not always in the places you'd think. I have also been frustrated by the massive renovation of old buildings being done in the city. But at least they're not just tearing these historic buildings down.

As far as drains go, St. Louis is one of the worst cities for that imaginable. Because the city is so old, pretty much all of our storm drains are also combined sanitary sewers. Unless you like wading through poo-water, it's not too much fun.

That's a shame about the drains! I was looking forward to finding some, but no, poo-water isn't my thing. I'm also happy that old buildings are getting put to use. I'll just have to put more effort into looking around... so would you suggest any particular neighborhoods or areas in the metro area, besides East St. Louis?

Don't brush off construction sites!! Besides the fact that they are some one of the easiest things to get access to, they often contain unlocked entrances to tunnel systems and roof tops. If your looking for drains you might find it easier in the burbs.

There's not really a specific area or anything. Most of my favorite abandonments are in totally different areas. Just do some reasearch. There are a couple of really good websites about urban decay and urban exploration in St. Louis. I'd hate to just give you the info and ruin the fun of finding places for yourself.

No, I wasn't really asking for specific locales, just areas. I'm going out again this weekend... so better luck this time. I'm familiar with some of the websites on St. Louis urban decay - one of them helped me find a really great spot already.

About construction sites... sometimes that seems appealing, but especially near where I live several developments have been torched within the last year. I really don't want to end up with arson charges if I get caught wandering around in an active construction site. Never say never, but right now it doesn't seem worth the risk.

Drains in the burbs? I've never tried the whole "look for an outflow along the riverbank" strategy, that's what I had in mind, might do that.

I found several spots yesterday, one of them being a rather large complex of stuff near the Lemp. I've got more pictures and the like coming...
