Hanford Site

So I was looking thru the History Channel when I read about a secret city that the US government created in Washington State, called 'Site W'. It's located just outside of Richland, WA and was built to create plutonium for the Cold War era.

More about it can be viewed here.

Here's a pic of the site:

And a map of it's location:

Has anyone been out there, or know of it's current status?

I've looked into it...what bothers me though is that there is that mysterious radioactive black goo randomly in some places...

I went down there on a school field trip last year. And yes, it is true that the several of the containment tanks for the radioactive waste have decayed and need to be replaced. Im not exactly sure of its current status. Last I heard was that they were planning some kind of cleanup and something about radioactive contaminants in the Columbia river. I am unsure if thats an ongoing issue, though. Good luck with that, though. =)

Thats not entiry true...the old security buffer zone is now Hanford Reach National Monument where you can go boating, fishing and hunting actually.

Whats active though is the Pacific NW National Labority and the Columbia River Generating Station.

Though there is remains of the old town of Hanford on the property.

About how far, would you say, is this place from Tacoma? Or from Portland?

Is this all true, and worth checking out? Or is it just a shack and a telephone pole with a State Marker showing you where the site was?

LOL no....from what I understand....some bigger buildings are still standing....Wikipedia says the HS is still there but if I remember right from someone at work who used to work there for some commissary there, he said there's a bit more.

From Tacoma I believe it was about an 8 hour drive by school bus. Its a bit out of the way and I found it mostly uninteresting, except the B-Reactor, which is still standing, but I wouldnt recommend trying to UE it unless you're ok with glowing in the dark for the rest of your life, which would severely disrupt your future UE since you wont have any stealth in the darkness. =P Have fun.

What service? Army, Marines, etc...?

I'll have to check that out with my friend who's at Fort Lewis. He may have some insight on the place.
