I use one of those retractable key/ID lanyards on my bright flashlight and anything else that will be used frequently. When I use a helmet and attach my headlamp, I duct tape the straps to the helmet.

In other flashlight news, I broke a Pentagonlight last night by getting the head of the light caught in a door and then closing the door on it. Not on purpose, but that's what went down.

I've got a belt holster thing for my MagLite, and it's also got a wrist strap. If I didn't have the belt thing, I'd probably use a long cord and attach it to my belt. So, in answer to your question, yes, it is a good idea to tether your light, especially in a drain, because it sucks majorly if you drop your light and lose it

The best thing to do I find is to run string trough an eye on whatever you want to strap to yourself, tie it with a reef knot and slip the string under your belt than run the item through the loop. That way you don't need a fancy belt or line.

I have a 4 cell steel maglite that i carry with me to any abandonment. I carried an additional tactlight with me on every mission until i lost it running from security at a demolished state hospital. The maglite has survived some serious shit, i've dropped it off a two story rooftop and it still worked fine afterwards.

I guess my point is to always carry a backup just in case, never know when something could go wrong.

I really like my 3D Maglite, but lately I've been using this little Garrity 3AAA LED light. It gives me more than enough light in most of the places I go.

I invested in a coast LED lenser v light. It's amazing, 5 BRIGHT white LEDS, one red LED. The battery life on it is incredible, and it's also ridiculously small.

I had thought about this with my insanely nice flashlight.. I had it mounded on my backpack strap on top of my shoulder so if need be I could have both hands free.. I figured I'd notice if it slipped out because it was grinding into my shoulder slightly and it was right there next to my head.. Then a barge started to dock right where we were and after getting behind some things we booked to get distance between us and the barge workers.. Then I noticed my flashlight fell off sometime when I was running and hurtling things.. sadly I cut through a small patch of field that was covered by really tall grass, We looked for it for a while and each time we have gone to that site since I have taken like 5 min to look around for it.. but it's a matte black flashlight somewhere likely in a field, I thought about bringing a metal detector but half the warehouse the field is next to is buried in the field to theres alot of metal.. So generally I would say if you care at all about the flashlight it's a good idea to tether the thing to something..

make sure you clip it to your belt, and not a belt loop...

I like to keep my lights tethered. That way, wether running from security, hopping a wall, or even losing my footing & taking a fall. I still got em. For most standard stuff I carry the a 2AA cel mini-mag with a nite-ize 1watt L.E.D. conversion. Plenty of light for most things.

& with the pouch & the wrist tether attached to my belt. There is no fear of losing it, & It does not hinder a climb.
For my back up I carry a Streamlight key-mate. It is pocket sized & comes as you see it. For its size it is very brite.

I have used the mini-mag for years with no trouble The L.E.D. is fairly new, but it is much brighter & the batts last a lot longer. So far so good. The key-mate is also new to my line-up. But due to its water-resistance & long batt life, I don't see any problems. I also carry a spare set of batts for both. For long tunnels or where I feel I may need a bit of security. I carry a 3D mag w/ the L.E.D. conversion. Get the MAG not the nite-ize coversion. Big diff in beam strenth. This I keep in the truck & only bring when needed. It is a heavy item when not needed.

I'm going to agree with the maglight people. I've got a 3 cell with the LED conversion bulb and a belt loop. It's more than bright enough for pretty much everywhere I've been so far, it isn't cheap enough for me to consider disposable, but it's also not as bad to lose as an insanely expensive flashlight. And for stealthy operations all I have to do is swap out for the red lens I bought at the police supply store. The thing was only about $1.99 and makes the light damn near impossible to see from any distance at all while still providing enough light to explore by. As backups I carry a mini maglight, a few lightsticks(they light up a place better than you'd think), and an 8 LED + laser light I got for $10 from the local army surplus store.

I take back the statement about the 1watt nite-ize conversion. Garbage! It flickers on & off & I decided it threads the cap too close to the end. Having tried out other Nite-Ize products. I think their whole line is junk. But hey, my opinion. I just up-graded to a 2 AA cel 3 watt L.E.D.. Holy shit brighter. The only drawbacks so far are no hole for a tether & it's about an inch longer

I have been lurking here for a while and I know there are a thousand threads on this, but what is the best flashlight to have? I was going to get a SureFire G2, but I want a flashlight that runs longer than an hour for a reasonable price. I think I might get an LED Mag, but I don't really understand the difference between the "3-Cell D" and "4-Cell D" and what-not. I guess the more cells the more light the flashlight gives off? I don't know much about flashlights so any help would be appreciated.

I have had two SureFire G2 Nitrolone lights for over 3 years now, and they work great. They throw off enough light at 65 lumens with the standard P60 bulb (the optional P61 bulb gives off 120 lumens!), and the run time is acceptable at 1 hr if used continuously, but I get many hours of use out of mine because I generally use the tail switch in pulses (off and on with the thumb as needed), which extends the life of the batteries and bulb considerably. I also keep a set of spare CR123 lithium batteries with me along with a spare bulb in case I need to swap in the field (has not happened yet).

I do have Maglites too, and the 3 D-cell puts out about 25-27 lumens (for a short time only- 20 minutes tops with new batteries), despite Maglite saying it's 37.25 lumens. The 4 D-cell Maglite I have puts out about 35-40 lumens at best for about 15 minutes (with new batteries) despite Maglite saying it's 62 lumens. The lumen measurements I've given for the Mags are with Krypton or Xenon bulbs. I have not measured the LED Mags I own yet, but for the cost I would stick with another brand such as Streamlight, SureFire, Pelican, etc. In general I'm not pleased with the Maglite LED's light throw and quality, but cannot give objective data on it at this time. The one good thing with the D-cell Maglites is that you can smack rabid squirrels and rats over the head as needed.

The more D-cells a Maglite (or any flashlight) has, the longer the device will run d/t a greater source of power available, and also it will create greater power. But the power issue is not a factor with LED's since most LED flashlights will not shine brighter (or throw more lumens) d/t the power to the LED's being at a constant and regulated flow. Flashlights with bulbs do shine brighter when more power is supplied, but the drawback is shorter bulb life or blowing the bulb entirely. Also, the more cells a battery has, the more weight that has to be carried around, especially with Maglites.

I'm in the habit now of carrying a primary light (Streamlight Stinger DS LED, Pelican 7060, SureFire G2 or a G3, etc). I do use sometimes a 2AA Mini Maglite as a secondary, which throws off a comfortable amount of light and is easy to carry, or a Smith & Wesson Galaxy 12 LED.

Sorry for the long answer, but I hope some info was helpful.

go to k-mart, radio shack, or walmart -

most of them have a $20 - $30 LED flashlight
which runs on 3 AAA or 2 AA batteries.

these last an amazingly long time and provide
usually over 100 hours of illumination.

hand held or head mounted - get and LED light
source - small and compact - avoid a 4 D
cop maglight, its just more to carry.

Hi Bander87,

The Arc AAA Premium looks nice. It's simple in design which makes it ideal for exploring. I may have to pick one up myself. I do believe that I have the flashlight bug (real bad) in me

Hope Manchester is providing enough places to explore. Maybe we'll have to hook up some time for some exploring since we are not to far apart.

I will check out the Arc flashlight website you provided.

Thanks,

LunarLumen
