A CITY OF THE DEAD

i am sure that most of you dont know, but in the beginning of time we were all nomadic people that followed heards around the world. as the heard moved so did our living situations. the only permanent resting places were graves. and as we made these voyages across the world during extreme heat and extreme cold there were certain places were old or injured people were left along the trail. this particular lifestyle made people quickly learn that at certain junctions certain people would not make it, and slowing down the entire camp of people could put them all at risk, so elderly or injured people volunteered to stay at different points along the trail. these individuals were staying to wait untill their death. after years and years of people stopping at the same dangerous points, the amount of graves began to grow. this is where the idea of a city came from. it was literally a city of the dead, the only prominent resting place of a person.

when we began to realize that we could live off of the land and farm, we set up the towns and cities that we lived in based on the only prominent things we knew at that time... graves.

since this is the critique forum...

1. lotta grey. more sky would enhance?

2,3,4,5. centered, documentation snapshots. i don't see much thought put into these. pull out, close in, head-on, re-frame.. do something interesting. subject would be better served by faster optics (f4 or wider).

6. details lost in jacked contrast.

everything was shot in narrow ap, maybe f8.0 or higher? this makes the entire picture the subject, which, unless it was a wide landscape shot like the last, perhaps, doesn't seem like a stellar idea given the subject matter. the tree branches steal the show, for example.

if using a digital camera, don't simply convert to greyscale. mapping directly to the two colors of black and white would be a more accurate translation than simply changing the color information to its greyscale equivalent. you retain the deep blacks and crisp whites without any detail loss.

Yag thank you very much for taking the time to truly critique the pics. dont get me wrong i like to hear good things about my work, but it is also nice to see some constructive critism.

as for 2,3,4 i was kinda skeptical about the trees in the background when taking the shots, but when i was walking around the juxtaposition between the living and the marker of the dead was really powerful for me. i think i am going to take some time and try to recrop them, maybe that will make them more interesting.

as for the last picture, i took some of the detail away in an attempt to make the picture feel a little more dream-like. i think that the picture came out nice for what i was trying to achieve, but there are also alot of positive things about the original that got lost in the process.

thanks again man. it is great to be critiqued by a legend.

Can you explain to me about how to map directly to the two colors... is there a specific tutorial that you can recommend.

i have been using the desaturate option not just changing it to grayscale. which i feel like is a little bit better than what i was doing.

any ideas would be great. thanks

assuming photoshop:

try this on one of your photos and then look at the results side-by-side. you should see a difference.

I'd shoot for a more neutral tone in the sky in some of these. The blank white is too bright against the main focus of the image (the statues?)

Just my opinion. Otherwise, I love the graveyard stuff, as well.

Really nice shots, I particularly like the first one. It's pretty cool how you glorify the statues via the angle you took the pictures at.
