| | Abandoned Chilean Mining Towns < on 4/16/2007 8:42 PM >
| | | I recently found out there is a ton of abandoned mining towns in Chili. (you need to cut and paste the links) http://maps.google...hl=en&q=-23.148568,-69.61375&layer=&ie=UTF8&z=13&ll=-23.154724,-69.647484&spn=0.0685,0.172005&t=k&om=1 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chacabuco Chacabuco is one of the many abandoned nitrate or "saltpeter" towns ("oficinas salitreras" in Spanish) in the Atacama Desert of northern Chile. might be a bit dangerous because of the 98 lost landmines around though
http://maps.google...&hl=en&q=-22.59851,-69.668072&layer=&ie=UTF8&z=16&ll=-22.597391,-69.667697&spn=0.008598,0.014462&t=k&om=1&iwloc=addr
Not sure the name of this one^ http://maps.google...hl=en&q=-20.208351,-69.795038&layer=&ie=UTF8&z=17&ll=-20.208169,-69.794694&spn=0.00437,0.007231&t=k&om=1&iwloc=addr http://en.wikipedi...ra_Saltpeter_Works Humberstone and Santa Laura Saltpeter Works are two former saltpeter refineries located in northern Chile. They were declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2005. So.... anyone down there in Chili?

98? Doesn't sound much when compared to what countries like Laos or Cambodia have to offer :/

Actually anti-personnel mines are not designed to kill. Of course stepping on one would really ruin your day, but it's quite likely that you'd stay alive. Anyway, I'm pretty sure that staying on the marked paths and so on would keep you in one piece. "Lost landmines" sound like they weren't found my the deminers.

| | | Personally, I would avoid such places. The aforementioned places were all sites where the indigenous population worked and died as virtual slaves. If you go to Chile, go to the Andes or Santiago. Find the secret military bases and internment camps of the dirty war (super bouns points for photos).

| | | South America in general probably has a ton of great abandoned mining towns, I'm surprised I haven't heard about anyone exploring them. BTW, "chili" is a pepper, "Chile" is the country ;)
