Discovery in a steam tunnel.
< on 4/16/2007 2:26 AM >

Last night, while exploring a steam tunnel at school, we made a pretty cool discovery. No, it wasn't a body, it was better. We found an old nuclear physics lab. All the door appeared to be locked from the inside, but a computer was on, making it look like it was still in use. Construction workers cut the steel grate to access the tunnel, which emptied into the room. There was all sorts of cool equipment in the room which we didn't know what it did.

Exploring the room led us to an ominous set of stairs. What was beyond them was simply amazing. Two words, particle accelerator. It took us a while to figure it out (there was a sign behind us on the wall). Cool stuff.

Not into the storage room, that door had an alarm. There was a sign down the stairs on the open door to let us know about the radiation. We couldn't see it till we went to leave. None of my hair is falling out yet.

We know the school used to have a small swimming pool type reactor somewhere, and judging from the way that room was designed, we think that might have been it back in the day. The area with the desk in it was directly above the accelerator, and the floor the desk was on was made of removable concrete slabs that were impossible to move without large machines. You can see in the right side of the desk photo that there was also a lip around the area, kinda like a swimming pool. I guess the only way to tell is to do more exploring.

If the computer was still on it couldn't have been abandoned *that* long ago, although the dust layer says otherwise. Still, ultra-cool find!

This has to be the coolest thread on here in a long time. Very cool find.

I like how they used fish tank stands and bar stools to prop up the equipment.

The construction in that area is complete now and looks like the tunnel has been re-sealed. We got in the tunnel via a doorless doorway that opened into a rather empty room. The tunnel had a steel grate the had been cut off, so that's probably back too. It's got a new window and a new door, so I doubt getting is possible anymore. :( Here's a few more that didn't make the first post.

Well, you could get back in, but it would take dealing a lot of damage to something. The building this room is a part of is under renovation, and all the doors seemed to be padlocked from the inside. I'd prefer not to go hacking up my school though.

Your lucky i don’t think there's an inch of tunnel at my school that i haven’t seen four or five times and i haven’t found anything worth mentioning. All of it has been bland, boring, hot tunnels.

I was talking with a guy in the physical plant, and he says its possible to get into the steam plant and other buildings from the first tunnel I found. I can't wait for the next time out.

That story is crazy cool! Definitely not abandoned. I would ask someone in charge about it. Say something like "I hear there is a nuclear lab somewhere in the school...?"
