The Story...
At one time, Ripley's Believe It Or Not offered in excess of $100,000 to the person or persons who could solve a bizarre light phenomenon in Paulding, Michigan.

Nearly every clear evening, strange circular spheres of light dance on the horizon of the tiny community, and at one point seem to follow the pathway of electrical lines.

The lights have been captured on film by Michigan Magazine and Channel Six News out of Marquette. Experts from Ripley's have been to the location to examine the phenomenon.

At the location of the Paulding lights, the Michigan Forest service has put up signs which indicate the best area from which the lights can be seen. So far, no logical conclusions have been reached. The lights have been witnessed as being red, white and green. These lights are not to be confused with the Northern Lights. They are a phenomenon that is unique to Paulding, Michigan.

Locals say the lights have been viewed for a long time. Eye witnesses claim to have seen the lights way back at the turn of the century, while on their way to the train depot at Watersmeet.

Various legends have developed concerning the lights. One myth explains the lights as the ghost of a railroad brakeman, while other say it is the ghost of an Indian dancing on the power lines. Some locals attest to the fact that the lights start over Lake Superior and make their way inland. The public is welcome to view the strange lights.

ehhh who really cares... I mean its cool and all, you seem to be more into supernatural things and I think you'll be a lil disappointed out of what you get about that on this forum. Not many people here are all into ghost phenomenons. I personally think its cool, but I'm not about to drive all the way up to the UP following some ghost story.

Silvernail,
You should go get the book Weird Michigan. You will love it. It has stories about the Paulding Lights, Melonheads, etc.

we went there a couple of years ago. it was fun to get caught up in the hype of. and we went for a really long walk towards the lights, though this was fall and the weather wasn't that great and it was pretty messy. it was fun though.

When I was on my way to OPEX '94 from Minneapolis we did stop by and check out the Paulding Light. At the time I'd never heard of it and my buddy was telling me about it on the detour there. He claimed he'd been there once years back but couldn't remember exactly where it was. I thought he was full of shit and laughed it off.

After getting directions from some people smoking outside of a bar nearby, we finally got to the pull-off spot on the dirt road and walked up to the edge of the train tracks. And sure enough, there's a bright light way off in the distance down the tracks. It kinda wavered a bit, but it might have just been my eyes constantly trying to focus from staring into a light. We watched it for about another 10 minutes or so, but then the light just disappeared and never reappeared. A teenage couple had pulled up in their car while the light was still shining and they looked like they were hoping for privacy, so a few minutes after the light went away we took off.

Some time later, I saw a bit about it on some Discovery Channel show. As the story goes, some train derailed back in the day and people think it's the ghost/spirit/haunting/whatever of the conductor who died in the crash, or it's supposed to be the light of the locomotive or something like that. Supposedly, some people have walked down the tracks for miles toward the light to try to find out what it is, but it never gets any closer.

I didn't have the feeling it was supernatural or anything like that. It just seemed like a regular light from some high-powered lamp on a tower or something. But, I didn't see it during the day and I didn't try walking towards it, so who knows.

Anyways, that's my Paulding Light experience.

EDIT: Oops, missed the post above with the Ripley's description. My facts stand corrected.

Until now, I'd only heard of the Melonheads in Kirtland, Ohio. I had no idea we had them too.

I've searched for the Paulding Light, but never found it. As a sober teen Yooper, there wasn't much else to do, and not many sober teens to do it with. Everyone else would be high and spooking each other into believing they'd seen it, but I never could.
