Hello all! I'm living in Columbia right now, but I'm a native St. Louisan and will be back in town at several points during the summer (either by myself or with Fett and/or Tubabro). I've yet to get around St. Louis exploring much, mostly for lack of people to do it with when I lived there, so I'm always up for going out. Feel free to send me a message.

As for me, probably read it in the huge thread about STL caves elsewhere on UER... but I think I read something to that effect in the RFT once too. Friends talk too. But I have proof of nothing, since I don't know the way in!

It's critically important to be very careful about ANY location information that you share.

Yeah, I'm a "location nazi".

I don't have any concrete information on any of the caves in this area, nor would I share it publicly here. I think everyone I've ever known here wants to get down there so that's reason enough to be careful. I've been less-than-fascist about information regarding locations in prior posts, a combination of excited naivety and the fact that nowhere I've gone thus far hasn't already been documented publicly on the internet somewhere. But now, I hear and understand.

The way I heard about this and got the urban exploring itch is that my colleges theater program rents out part of the lemp brewery for storage and when I was getting a tour of our part of the building they told us about all the things below in the cave and how we would never be allowed to go down. Since then finding locations have been a mix of driving around looking for interesting things (found the laclede power plant and cotton belt that way and looking on Irrational Ecstasy for the existence of things and then tracking them down by various means.

Nice to meet you. Since I'm here on a permanent basis, it would be best if you contacted me about when you're wanting to explore. Also, I'm not exactly a tour guide just yet so if you see anything you want to check out, I'm all ears (send a PM).

Last summer a few guys and I held a meet and greet type bbq at Carondelet Coke Plant. I was hoping to meet some new St. Louis explorers. Unfortunately, no one really showed up. It looks like there's a little bit of a stronger showing on the forums here now, so maybe we'll try it again in a month or so. Would anybody be up for that?

You can count me in 100%, and I'd bring a couple of other people I've been out with too. Just give me some fair warning... as it stands I've already got plans for the first two weekends of June.

How about that BBQ? I visited the coke plant last weekend. That place is beyond violated. But that's probably why it would be suitable for a BBQ... in fact, I found the remains of a burnt tire, still smoldering inside one of the buildings. We could burn one of our own, and roast some pork steaks over it... mmm, sooty.

Really though, I figured it couldn't hurt to get this topic rolling again.

The last BBQ at the Coke plant was a great time. I'd love to do it again.

As I mentioned earlier I've got some things going on the next couple of weekends but beyond that everything's cool. Somebody needs to just pick a tentative date and we'll go from there.

haha, a bbq at the coke plant, I can say from personal experience that it is a great place to do a bbq. (hehe)

Also the concrete barriers that used to block the access road from the north side have been moved so you can drive right in.

My first post was going to be something like, 'I live in Saint Louis and have property near pea ridge mine. I (might) have explored various local spots over the years including RDP tunnels, WU powerplant tunnels, old lindenwood high school and (might) have had some fun times riding the elevator tops in old WU dorm towers, hanging outside on the UClub Tower Roof Courts, WU roofs, tower grove park water tower etc. I've been a divemaster on the staff of a local underground mine scuba diving operation and also enjoy climbing. I love caving and (might) have been in back entrances to Meremec Caverns and undeveloped caves such as Illinois state caverns/cliff cave/Bunch of Caves in Meremac State Park... I have a first aid certification and am ready to see some new sights under my city. I'm especially interested in Pea Ridge Mine and St. Louis Underground Caves/mines/Infrastructure-please contact me if you are interested in doing some underground exploring.'

Yes, that might have been my first post but unfortunately our illustrious post dispatch printed the article (pasted below) and I thought it might serve to remind us of the importance of choosing locations wisely-and keeping a backup plan. It seems the owner of the East St. Louis building?/recycling lot? was sick of intruders so he shot these guys in the back. I hope the people he shot were the same M-Fers who were stealing the gutters from my garage last year. I went to E.STL few yrs back to help a friend who had swamped his car on the way to the clubs. A water main had broken and no-one marked the road-other cars were also swamped. While asking a cop what to do with the car, I noticed that the hood of the patrol car looked like it had been blasted point blank by a shotgun a couple times. Observe these details when deciding whether the benefit of exploring an area is worth the possible cost. In addition to choosing your location prudently it always helps to have a backup plan. If I am ever caught intruding I would like to be sure to immediately convey that I am just here exploring and taking photos, I am not a threat nor a theif and I mean no harm. Depending on the level of aggravation displayed, I might take cover and go to the next backup plan ;) I hope I don't seem paranoid, I think UE is a great fun. This is my first post and the article seemed at least partially relevant, even though the people who were shot were definitely thieves and not explorers. On second thought it COULD have been that mos6502 guy and his fellow picnicers, they seem pretty shady... (hehe, just kidding. Let's all hook up! Slim Jim- if ur reading this -PPG is my dream, I will get into that in the future, I want to fly!)

--------Begin Paste of STL Post Dispatch Article 6-9-07:----------------------

Below is the link to the story. http://www.stltoda...BF7B7?OpenDocument

Here is the story.

EAST ST. LOUIS — Police are investigating the shooting of two men who they believe were scavenging for metal in a building in the 500 block of 20th Street and were shot by the business owner.

The business owner, whose name was not released, told police that he heard a noise in his salvage business and saw two intruders.

East St. Louis Assistant Police Chief Lenzie Stewart said the business owner shot at both men.

A 35-year-old man was shot in the stomach. He was taken to Kenneth Hall Regional Hospital in East St. Louis then transferred to a St. Louis hospital, where he was listed in critical condition, Stewart said. The other man, 48, was shot in the back and was taken to Kenneth Hall Regional Hospital. His wound was not considered life threatening.

Police were alerted to the shooting on Thursday and found one man at 17th Street and Ridge Avenue and the other one in the area of the 500 block of North 20th.

Stewart said police also are investigating allegations made by one of the wounded men, who told police that after they were shot, they played dead and overheard the business owner plotting to drag their bodies down into the basement, hold them there until dark and then dump them in the river.

The business owner turned himself in to police with his attorney present, Stewart said.

Stewart said the two wounded men had past arrests and are known to engage in copper and metal scavenging.

No charges had been filed by late Friday. Police will submit their findings to the St. Clair County state's attorney's office for possible charges when the investigation is complete, Stewart added.

Theft of metals has been an ongoing problem for area police departments.
