UER mentioned in UK magazine

Hi all,

UER got a small metion in a magazine her in the UK. It's the Big Issue which for those who aren't aware is sold by people in the street who are homeless, they get to keep half the money the make from selling it - but they also have to buy them in the first place. It's a way of getting them a small income.

For those who DO know what the Big Issue is, yes I am one of the minority that actually buys it!

The pic isn't good enough to read the article, download a proper, readable, pdf scanned version here.

Sorry it's black and white but i'm at work and it's the best the photocopier/scanner can manage!!

I've reproduced the article here, mostly accurately.

INDUSTRY INSIDER GIVES TIPS TO DANGER-CLIMBERS

Self-styled 'Urban Explorers' (UE) who break into construction sites and climb tower cranes as a sport, are receiving tips from rogue insiders, The Big Issue (TBI) has learned.

The crane-climbing craze has led to the extreme sports enthusiasts being dubbed 'craniacs', as UE websites post pictures of the UK's highest-profile cranes that have been climbed. As their covert feats may involve trespassing, UEs typically use aliases - including 'Austinpowers200T, 'CitadelMonkey' and 'Slartybartfast.' Spectacular climbing feats are followed up by postings on UE websites of the climbers with obscured faces posed against breathtaking views of the city at night from the crane peaks. But when TBT investigated one UE website. Urban Exploration Resource (UER), a UE claiming to be a tower crane operator in training was posting tips for crane-climbers. 'Amanita' said: "If anyone's interested. I carl post some info about cranes - different types of crane, crane anatomy and so on. I've taken the training course to prepare me for actual work. so I've got manuals and lots of neat stuff. If there's any interest., I may even ask the webmasters if I can submit it as an article, perhaps with pics."

Amanita also points fellow enthusiasts to an actual crane operators message board, containing, as Amanita says, "stuff that would - be climbers should be aware of." Amanita then further reassures website visitors: "I've got nothing against crane-climbers who just take pictures and do no harm."

Within minutes. fellow craniac 'fatLouie' queried: "Tell me about possible security - other than guards. Like any type of electronic surveillance possibilities..."

Further advice on UER included: 'Any good crane operator will give his crane a thorough check at the beginning of shifts [checking for] any sign of damage or vandalism to the crane and ... the climber might come back to their favourite climbing crane to find it decked out with a nice locked enclosure around the base. "

Yet another U E, "Whitehorse', also in the construction profession, counselled: UFO!' a while I was the guy who had to climb out there and bolt the (cranes) together ... Do yourself a favour if you plan on climbing cranes: ever add booze to the climb. Get a proper harness and tie yourself off when you stop to take pies, Go with a previous climber."

Meanwhile. a damning article about UE in Swindon prompted a flood of heated postings from UE enthusiasts, among them 'badfan.' Badfan argued: "Many guys and girls (who engage in UE) are construction workers themselves and put health and safety before the thrill of entering the properties."

Sites hit by the climbers in recent weeks include Gailiford Try's (GT) regeneration project at the Tarling Estate in Shadwell, east London, where a UE climbed a 75m crane, and Bovis Lend Leases's (BLL) Unilever Hou I' project in the capital's Blackfriars Bridge area, A GT spokesman admitted: "It's very difficult to keep out people who are a exceptionally determined and well equipped as these intruders have shown themselves to be. Obviously, if intruders fall from a height, they are likely to cause themselves injury or death, They also seriously risk harming others should they dislodge materials or tools on ascent and interfere with the operating equipment. We thoroughly condemn this dangerous and irresponsible activity."

However. the spokesman insisted: "We have absolutely no evidence nor reason to believe that our staff has colluded with these intruders. All staff are made aware of site rules, Any transgressions are dealt with through the appropriate disciplinary procedure."

A BLL spokeswoman declined to comment at the time of publication on whether insiders could be providing tips to wannabe craniacs.

The UE site www.28dayslater.co.uk has recently posted pictures of crane climbs. TBI contacted www.28dayslater.co.uk, but following our queries about insider collaboration and how the UE community could ensure that all climbers observed safety rules and did not leave behind traces according to the UE's code of conduct - TBI was banned from ever entering its forum again.

Yeaaa....There's a lot of risk involved "crane climbing" or more generally, any type of buildering...While I don't particularly do it often, I've done it enough to know the risks involved (as I'm sure anyone who's done any type of buildering know). Crash pads are good...but they're not quite as effective if you're 75m in the air.

But all in all, it was cool that UER got mention

Oh Jesus, can no one write a positive and ACCURATE article in the UK?

Fucking dicks.

Chris...

We all had ostriches. My dad had an ostrich farm! I remember one day someone came in and said the high altitude bombing of Kosovo had been a limited success, so we all went out and celebrated… by killing an ostrich and boiling it in kiwi fruit.
