So, I've been to Chippewa Lake Park near Medina, and Idora Park in Youngstown (although if you've been you know there's pretty much nothing there.) and I'm kind of wondering if anybody knows of any other abandoned amusement parks near NE Ohio. I was just at Chippewa two weeks ago and it looks like a few more buildings have collapsed or partially collapsed, but the Hamburger Factory is still standing (although there are gaping holes in the floor) and a few other buildings are still up. All the rides are still standing strong, except for the big dipper tunnel. The picnic pavillion is still up although I'm not sure about how sturdy the stage is inside. I'll get some pictures up when I get home from school.

Dont know about any more in the North Eastern parts of Ohio but I do know there are a few down here in Southwester Ohio. Down here we used to have quite a few cheap alternatives to families who didn't want the corporate theme park enviroment of the expensive, yet very wonderful Paramount's Kings Island. There was once a day in the mid 90's, my golden days as a child, you could go to
-Coney Island amusement and water Park
-Surf Cincinnati Water park
-Americana Amusement Park
or
-Fantasy Farm Amusement Park
Instead of the massive Kings Island which is a very nice park (and a wonderful place to work I might add) yet these places were better for families who wanted to avoid large crowds. Coney Island is still open but Americana, Fantasy Farm, and Surf Cininnati (all within 20 minutes of my house) have all shut thier admission gates and still stand abandoned today. Fantasy Farm is still fully accessable with little risk of getting caught, Americana (thanks to taggers and vandals) is now on 24 hour guard, and Surf Cincinnati sits rotting and empty complete with a wave pool, slides, and many buildings, in a hidden industrial corner of Cincinnati.

To read about how I hid from a guard for an hour within Americana Amusement park check out this thread:

What was the security situation like at Chippewa Lake? I went there last summer and had a blast, and wanted to do it again this summer with a better camera.

Hit me up when your in the area for Surf Cincy, I've been in it quite a few times and now the best way to get in that most people have been able to use. THeres also a few hazards inside you may want to avoid. I'd love to show you around, its an amazing location.

IlDuce, I know you expressed interest in surf cincy too, if youd like to check it out soon let me know. I have spring break all next week so if any ones up for it and coming down here hit me up.

Security situation is minimal. I've been there twice in the last two months and only saw the cops once, the first time when some kid parked right outside of the gate. I was there last weekend, and over the 4 hours or so I was there, I saw probably....12-15 people, some of them locals (one was an older lady who told me about going to the park for highschool dances in the ballroom). As long as you're quiet and respectful, most of them won't give you a problem.

I heard chippewa is coming down this summer so they can turn the land into some public park or something, but i wanna try and get up there and see it when im up near the area to go to Cedar Point. Im not so much worried about cops or security, but I really fucking hate snakes, see any of those there?

Interesting...I asked a couple of the locals if they'd heard of any plans and they said no. I really hope that's not true...it'd be a big loss. I've been hearing rumors of "it's coming down" since 01 or 02 though, so I guess anything is possible.

Edit: I found this quote from the Cuyahoga County Planning Commission's website

"The Medina County Park District secured a $1.2 million loan that will enable them to purchase the 360 acre Chippewa Lake. The acquisition does not include the former amusement park, which remains up for sale."

It appears, at least as of January, that the park's going nowhere fast. Something could've happened in the last 4 months and it just skipped the news though, who knows.

Didn't see any snakes on any of my trips to the park. Doesn't mean they're not there, though - I'm sure they are. The grass is awful high in some places. Also, if you're allergic to poison ivy, I'd suggest you take preventative measures, as the grassier areas of the park are covered in it.

Flash, Great pics. I am just surprised that when they closed that down that they didn't take all of that stuff with them. It is just weird to think that that used to be a place that was wide open and not filled with trees and debris. Keep up the good work.

They did sell off a lot of stuff when the park closed. Many other things have been removed (from what I've been told) by the local residents in an effort to keep kids from breaking/ruining/burning them....I have some old views of the park and you can see that there were many more rides/buildings (most of the buildings have since collapsed. 30 years of elements and non-maintenance will do that).

Scooter, I did see some pics that were taken in 1997 of that park, and these pics show alot more deterioration than those others did.

I agree, it's gone downhill rather quickly in the last few years: the carts are gone off the track for the Coaster, as are the letters above the loading platform, the ballroom burned down (presumably taking with it any of the last few ride cars/putt putt course leftovers that were hanging out in the basement), the cages are gone from the Swinging cages, etc. Speculation is that many of the things that are missing were likely removed by neighbors who were concerned about seeing things stolen/burned/destroyed by vandals. I don't know for sure, but that's the rumor What's left there though is definately worth checking out.

If anyone is interested Barnes and Noble (The Bookseller) is selling a pictorial book of the history of Chippewa Lake Park. It has alot of original photos from the opening and various milestones as well as some pictures taken by people who visited CLP in its heyday. I would have liked to have seen more text and dialouge but its definatly worth a glimpse even if its not worth purchasing. (I'm assuming that it is only offered in Cleveland area stores but it might be on Amaozon also).
