Child Falls into Open Manhole Josh Pringle Sunday, April 1, 2007 Barrhaven Councillor Jan Harder says it's "ridiculous" that someone would remove a manhole cover. A seven year old girl suffered minor injuries after falling into a manhole during her birthday party at Utman Park. Ottawa Police say as the child was running, she fell into the hole. The child was able to get footing on a pipe which prevented her from falling all the way down the six foot deep hole. The girl was pulled to safety by her two older cousins. Police say someone removed the manhole cover and covered it with an election sign. Harder tells CFRA News "there better be a stiff sentence" for those responsible for removing the manhole cover. The City of Ottawa is conducting a search of the remaining manholes in Barrhaven to ensure they are covered The Ottawa Police Service is asking for the public's help with their investigation.

| | | Welcome to the fucking planet It's not uncommon for people to do that at sites, prolly mostly Cu looters, vandals, and such. They want the place to themselves. That's my theory. In an overgrown lawn of knee high grass they become almost invisible; sometimes only the stench of sewage (if it's present and your lucky) alerts you.
Just when I thought I was out... they pulled me back in. |

| | | Dare I say April fools? While I'm sure this happens on a semi-regular basis (hey, they had to start putting big brightly colored stickers on plate glass sliding doors to keep people from walking into them...) I'm also inclined to assume that anything that claims to be a news event that happens on April 1st that makes you laugh is likely and April Fools joke. sorry to spoil the fun...

| | | I left a manhole cover off one time, but it was one of those manholes on a high platform (like four feet off the ground) and it was in the middle of the woods. It took us an hour to open it (it was fuckin' heavy) and then I accidentally rolled it down the hill, and we were just too lazy to drag the damn thing all the way back up.

| | | If that article was real I wonder how this is going to affect the drainers in Ottawa.

News Releases Ottawa Police Service For Immediate Release: 31/03/2007 Child Falls in Manhole FOR IMMEDIAT RELEASE: March 31, 2007 at 4:40 pm (Ottawa) - Ottawa Police is looking for the public's assistance to identify culprits responsible for removing a manhole cover at Utman Park, Barhaven area. The manhole in question is close to a play area used by younger children. On 31 March, at approximatelty 4:00 pm, a birthday party for a seven year old girl was cut short by her falling into the manhole. Unknown parties had removed the manhole cover which was subsequently covered up by an election sign. As the child was running, she fell into the hole which was at least six feet deep, and partially filled with water. Fortunately for the child, she got footing on a pipe which prevented her from falling all the way down. She held on to the edge of the hole with her elbows and cried for help. Nearby children could not see her initially. She was rescued by two older cousins who pulled her to safety. The child sustained minor injuries to her back, and was quite traumatized by the incident. Anyone with information regarding the culprits is encouraged to contact Ottawa Police investigators at 613- 236-1222, ext 2266. Sent by S/Sgt Anda Pember

As for the effect on drainers, I'd expect the OPS and the public will be paying much more attention to anyone seen lifting or accessing drains.

This one can lift the weight of a Montreal raver, don't know about the Barrhaven ones though. Maybe they're just punks.
yep. |
