If anyone is near Cairo, I have been consistently pleased with my trips there. It is a town that is slowly dying due to a lack of industry, and it is ripe with abandoned building. There is an abandoned hospital (3 stories + basement and elevator room on roof), an abandoned dentist office, school, and the downtown area is best described as desolate. I have yet to encounter a difficult entrance at any location in the city. The police seem to be tolerant of random dorks with cameras and turn a moderately blind eye as long as you dont flaunt yourself in front of them.

Aside from the public structures that are abandoned and falling in, there are plenty of empty houses around, some burned out, some not, some falling in, some stable, and one church slowly caving in.

Seriously worth the trip to anyone interested. Im always up for going, if anyone is interested let me know.

Also, the hospital seems to be randomly inhabited by a homeless person. His home is on the first floor, and he seems to be able to notice people in the hospital with relative ease. He'll let you know hes there by making some noise. I personally try to stay out when hes around.

I just finished reading about how Cairo spiraled into a huge decline. Good to see that someone witnessed some of the aftermath.

Its definitively dying. There is no two ways about it. SIUC has a photo class that is dedicated to documenting that town, so fortunately, Im not alone.

I've been to about half the US states looking for abandonments, and Cairo's downtown is the closest thing to a ghost town which still has a lot of downtown buildings standing that I've ever seen. Beautiful place. Most ghost towns out west are essentially demolished or revitalized, so Cairo is the place to go. Except for entire abandoned towns like Gilman, CO and Eagle Mountain, CA...that's a whole different ballgame.

I want to be different. But I want to be different just like everybody else, because if I really were different, everybody would think I was crazy and weird.

Neil Gaiman used Cairo, IL in his book American Gods published in 2001. Even then he said it was on the decline.

Take highway 57 south from Chicago, and it will bring you straight there. Looks pretty far though. Even further south than St. Louis.

Here's a few of my photos from one of those trips with Jim:

Cairo also has some abandoned industrial-type buildings (including a small grain elevator), some large abandoned mansions, and at least one vacant church. There was an abandoned bridge into the next little flat state over, but I think they blew that up.

Also there's a bunch of huge sandstone (silica) mines in the area. Those are typically awesome.

Great Pictures.

Cairo looks pretty awesome, I live in Carbondale, and I think me and some friends are planning a trip down there. Whats the safety like. A couple people have told me its not a very safe town, and to watch out.

Ive been down there a lot this spring. Were talking about once a week. Ive never had a problem. Granted I'm a 6'2 male, weighing in at 205 and I have mutton chops, so people look at me different. Seriously, just be smart about it. If the neighborhood looks sketchy, well, welcome to Cairo. The whole town looks sketchy. Just dont go looking for problems, and you probably wont have any. Dont flaunt your activities or try to draw attention, act like you belong there, and you should be fine.

And as an update, the hospital is now undergoing asbestos abatement. I dont know how long it will take them, but theyre going to kill all of the texture of the place. Unfortunate, but safer for all involved.

I'd personally rather go into a building that has the historic value over one that's asbestos free. I tend to be pretty careful, and who knows, maybe by the time I get sick from asbestos exposure they'll have anti-cancer pills. Or not. Either way. sucks that they're messing up a good building.
