| | Exploring Renfrew County part 1 < on 3/25/2007 9:33 PM >
| | | During August of '06 I spent a week up in Renfrew County. We came across several interesting sites. Some of which I got some decent shots of. While driving around I saw countless abandoned houses and barns that we just didn't have enough time to check out further. This first set of pictures is just exteriors of a few places perhaps worth investigating further on a return trip when I'm better equipped and have more time. First place isn't actually in Renfrew County but on the drive up. The Old Kaladar Hotel, in Kaladar unsuprisingly. I remember when this was operating, perhaps as recent as 5 years ago. Its a quaint little building
This is the now vacated movie theatre in downtown Pembroke. As has happened in countless Ontario towns beautiful downtown theatres have bitten the dust in favour of the mall/suburban multiplex. I bought a vintage postcard at the Champlain Museum (in Pembroke) that shows downtown Pembroke in the early 60s and the theatre is quite prominent.
Foresters Falls is a tiny town located close to the Ottawa River and is a jumping off point for many of the whitewater rafting companies that are round these parts. My grandparents used to own a farm just on the outskirts of town. The farm house is still there, just the same, still on the outskirts of town as Foresters Falls hasn't grown one bit in the 30 years since they've owned that land. As a wedding gift my parents recieved a small lot from the former farm which they still own. As we pulled into Foresters Falls this summer afternoon it felt like a scene right out of a Steven King novel - the place was deserted. No cars, no kids playing, no dogs, no sounds of lawn mowers humming in the background - none of the usual August sounds one would expect in a small town. I expected an old lady with white hair sitting on her front porch in a rocking chair to let out a shrill cackle any moment. But it seemed even she wasn't around. Foresters Falls seems to have had a beautiful general store that is no more. Note the faded Coca Cola sign and the handpainted "...& Son" blind in the window.
more to come

Just east of Forester's Falls is the village of Chenaux. Immediately across the bridge in Portage Du Fort there is a neat abandoned motel of 50's/60's vintage. A few kilometers east of there near the village of Bristol is a huge abandoned open pit iron ore mine. The ruins of the buildings are explorable, and in the winter you can crawl over the ice in the basement. In Ontario in Braeside there is an old lumber mill being demolished. The older brick parts are quite amazing. If you're in Renfrew County again, be sure to see some of these places.
