Amtrak is one train i have never been around (with an exception of the amtrak tunnel in NYC) so maybe they are hard to hear but all of the freight trains i can hear even around curves and such. Maybe it's just that i always try to be more aware of my surroundings so i find it strange that others get hit by these things.

When it snows again, listen for the trains....they get louder...

I really dont believe theres a risk of being hit by a train, and not even hearing it beforehand. Unless you're deaf or hard-of-hearing. Wouldn't trains be quieter in the snow? I mean, the snow would act as a sort of cushion on the rail, and also help to absorb sound, wouldn't it?

I am talking about snow in a air, but thats a different story.

There's not really a risk of being hit by a train unless you want to be hit or just stupid, but however Railroad Police will gladly make an example of you for trespassing if you get caught.

Sounds like some people need to join the railroad forum.....

I used to be with it, but then they changed what it was. Now what I'm with isn't it, and what's it seems weird and scary to me, and it'll happen to you, too!

there was a line that went from syracuse to adirondack junction (kahnawake quebec) that was a NYC line back in the days, Conrail abandonned 15 KM between beauharnois quebec and kahnawake. The line serves only a PPG chemical plant in kahnawake. and all they do is between coteau du lac and the plant (basically a shortline connected to CN)

Lots of people who get hit by trains are listening to walkmen or some sort of portable audio player.

Furthermore, BNSF police don't really care too much what people do on the tracks as long as you're not a hobo trying to catch a ride, selling/doing drugs, vandalizing trains, tracks or nearby buildings.

I used to see/date a girl whose dad was a BNSF officer who lived and worked out of the Tacoma area and she said it was extraordinarily rare for them to ever have to rough anyone up--usually only happened if someone gave them shit or flipped out on them but still a very rare occurrence.

I've heard that the railway police are pretty mean. Maybe daddy didn't tell her about the hobos that he threw in front of oncoming trains? I know thats an exaggeration, by the way. I'm simply saying that to make a point. But I've heard countless stories and warnings about how notorious the railway police are. My uncle's best friend lost a leg and bled to death, while someone else he knew was shot by the railway police for attempting to hop a train. Of course, I cant be sure that its true, since he told me about it. But I have heard a lot of stories and things to look out for.

It probably depends entirely when and where these events happen--I'm sure they could have been a lot rougher in the the distant past or how rough a city/area is.

And its not a case of "daddy didn't tell her" because I met the man, he was really nice and she repeated many stories of his experiences and I highly doubt he would have had anything to do.

They are real cops, with oversight and plenty of rules to protect the public, so widespread abuse seems extraordinarily unlikely.

When I lived on S. 74th and J, I could hear the trains on the tracks running along McKinley no problem. I think it's pretty clear that she wanted to become an hero.

Yeah, when I was eight, I used to live on south J street and could even hear it at night sometimes.

It's still hard to believe trains that travel so fast, dont have fences around them or some kind of barrier like a highway usually does.

It's hard to believe people accidentally get hit by things that have been around for over a century, are clearly dangerous, and constant efforts are made to educate people about how dangerous they are. Not only that, but they are loud, and you can *feel* them coming, and their crews sound an even louder signal when they see you in their path. I think plenty of precautions are in place, most anyone getting smacked by a train either wants to die, or is just perpetuating survival of the fittest.

There are trains, by the way, that do have fences around them. There are usually found where tracks are near a building, but not always.
