| | Tacoma girl killed by Amtrak train, from the Tacoma News Tribune < on 3/23/2007 3:04 AM >
| | | This is the article from the TNT this morning: TACOMA Girl killed by Amtrak identified as University Place 17-year-old http://thenewstribune.com Posted online: 8:00 a.m. Wednesday The girl hit and killed Tuesday in Tacoma by an Amtrak train has been identified as a 17-year-old University Place resident, the Pierce County Medical Examiner's Office said Wednesday. Angie S. Franklin was walking along the BNSF Railway tracks near Titlow Beach when the Amtrak Coast Starlight rounded a bend at about 10:50 a.m. The crew saw the teen on the tracks and an engineer sounded the train's whistle, Tacoma police and the BNSF railroad officials said. Franklin appeared to have moved off the tracks. Moments later, she tried to cross the tracks, police spokesmen Chris Taylor said. The train hit Franklin as she tried to run across. She died at the scene. The Starlight, which travels from Seattle to Portland, was stopped for a couple of hours for the investigation. Stacy Mulick, The News Tribune With as much respect to the girl's family as humanly possible, this should serve as a reminder to us all that trains are extremely dangerous and if you see one coming, get off the tracks, dont try to run across them. Additionally, the BNSF railway, as far as I know, is guarded quite well against trainhoppers, but that also makes sites like the Tacoma Underworld harder for us to UE, even if were're not into the whole trainhopping thing. Also, I have heard rumors that the BNSF security officers who have K9s, command them in German, so unless you speak German, dont try anything clever, like trying to tell the BNSF's dog Fluffy to sit in English. If you are unfamiliar with German, I also hear that a mix of concentrated lemon juice and ammonia works better than pepper spray on these dogs. Good luck! ^^

| | | A 17-year-old girl walking along train tracks at 10:50 am on a day when she should have been in school is not a recipe for an accident. It's a recipe for a suicide. And unless at least two of your senses have gone bad, there's no such thing as being surprised by a train. Regards, MoleNet94 [last edit 3/23/2007 3:40 AM by MoleNet94 - edited 1 times]

| | | Respectfully, I did not suggest that she was surprised or that it was an accident. Clearly, if the whistle was blown she knew what was coming. It is quite possible though, that you are right about the suicide, although thats just speculation. As for wondering the train tracks at a time when she should have been in school. That is common, especially near my high school, where there are train tracks that are frequently visited by students who skip class, during school hours, and the school administration typically does nothing about this problem, so it is left up to the school patrol, who are also notorious for their acquiescence during times of rule violation. Alternately, this can be a good thing for us explorers who are still in high school. ^^ [last edit 3/23/2007 3:51 AM by UEinthe253 - edited 1 times]

I've been around trains that have been moving up and down tracks many times and i have ALWAYS heard them coming about a mile to a half mile away no matter what direction i was facing them.

| | | It's still hard to believe trains that travel so fast, dont have fences around them or some kind of barrier like a highway usually does.

| | | If you take the Empire Builder, on the portion that runs on BNSF tracks, there's BNSF police at every hot box or so watching for anything of question.

I belive freight trains have speed limits when passing through incorporated areas. Amtrack and other passenger trains don't. I think. If I'm wrong, someone pipe up.

Passenger trains have a max speed of 79 MPH on all tracks where there is no special signaling systems per Federal Railroad Administration regulations. Freights usually go the same speed for the most part, but the dispatcher for freight trains sets a limit usually around 55, but you do see them going up to 79 MPH as well in areas where they can safely.

The Amtrak cascades as well as Via pass by my favorite railyard twice a day, and are VERY quiet, and almost cannot be heard..as the area has a lot of curves. As for the BNSF cops, none are here, even right buy the bnsf yards. Oh right i'm in canada, and BNSF uses local police, as well as CN rail police. I used to be with it, but then they changed what it was. Now what I'm with isn't it, and what's it seems weird and scary to me, and it'll happen to you, too! |

Police from other places (other than canada), cannot be deputized. Police in Canada cannot deputize anyone. They can be sworn in, but must pledge loyalty to the queen. If bnsf police were in Canada, they most likely would not be able to carry arms. [last edit 3/24/2007 2:30 AM by SteamPunk - edited 1 times]

Really? US Customs at any Pre-Clearence Station are deputized. I know that for a fact because at YYZ, they are all Special Constables in additon to their duties for controlling entry into the US.

Amtrak is one train i have never been around (with an exception of the amtrak tunnel in NYC) so maybe they are hard to hear but all of the freight trains i can hear even around curves and such. Maybe it's just that i always try to be more aware of my surroundings so i find it strange that others get hit by these things.

| | | I dunno if I've ever had a problem hearing a train coming, I'm usually pretty weary of such things when I'm on tracks. That is of course where trains go. Trains that travel at a high rate of speed. Trains that can kill you. I'm freaking out!! Lol. no, but I'm always quietly listening, and I shut my friends up pretty effectively.
