Depends. Local.live is good for its Bird's Eye function, which can give you a better view of the site. Google Earth holds the big-picture mapping functions.

I personally prefer mapper.acme.com because it allows smooth transition from topographic maps to satellite images, including images from Google Earth, at least for the U.S.

I dont really rely on google earth too much because the photos that are on there were taken in 2000. At least mine is, and it doesnt help too much

I've been looking for a click-and-drag topo map site for a while. Thanks!

maps.live.com is great if you're in the US, but only for the birds eye.. its aerials are much worse than Google's.

I know this has been talked about before on here but I don't remember the answer. When I go to that site it asks me to put in a business name and location. How do you search for just a location and get around the "search for some place to buy shit" page.

Interesting that I can tell that the images of my house were taken in the fall
of 2002.

Someone in England posted on Usenet that when he viewed his house, he could see his wife and himself in their garden...

i don't like Microsoft's controls with the use of the maps, and Google has covered more areas with better sat maps (in my area anyways).

In Atlanta and some other places, local.live has fully 3D maps with full camera movement. You can zoom down low and look up at buildings and stuff.

It's pretty resource intense though.

No one map solution is perfect, so I'm agnostic on the subject. But I am disappointed that Google isn't smarter about place name searches. I've searched on place names that were in the same US state and been transported clear across the country. WTF as the kids say.

Personally, if they combined the UI from Google Earth (and it being downloadable) with the bird's eye view from Local.live, I'd be in heaven.

I understand that much. It was unable to find my house or my place of work, and when I searched for Baltimore City Hall all it found was a bar with city hall in the name, and a three inch poor quality map. How can I get more than that from it ? It did however find 30+ Quizno's locations in the Baltimore area, now if I could find a 3D image of them.

It is my browser. It redirects to a whole different site instead of going to http://virtualearth.spaces.live.com/ it gives me http://intl.local.live.com/ which really really sucks.

That still doesn't give me a map.

Nothing beats google earth for just mapping out where a whole bunch of different locations are, not bad for finding drains either, this could be due to the predictability of melbournes drains though..
