(Viewed 1998 times) Barry Kooda  Location: The Cliff Gender: Male Trees  |  |  I finally broke the cardinal rule... < on 3/16/2007 8:15 PM >   I'd been eying three apartment complexes that are recently abandoned and awaiting destruction so I walked over and slid in under the temporary chain link fence. Immediately I saw a young black kitten and called to it. It responded but didn't come so I slowly walked over and it jammed itself into a vent under the building. I continued to wander around taking photos and heard the kitten crying near the laundry room so I tried again. This time I was able to get hold of it and picked it up. Then I saw another cat with about 3/4 of a tail and called to it but it ran away and then saw a calico and it struck me. "Oh crap.....Kitties." There are a lot of them there without food or water and not even a dumpster to find food in. As I was walking out, the boss of several guys boarding up windows drove up to see what I was doing and I told him about the cats. He said "That's OK." And I said "Really? Are you feeding them? It's not OK, there are a lot of cats and kittens here, there's no food or water and the whole place is going to be leveled." He was very understanding and said to tell his guys I had permission to be there whenever the gates were open. Now I have 7 cats in the house (counting the temporary one) and have to try to save as many as I can. I put out a group email to my neighbors but so far have had no response so I guess I'm it. Oh well, I always enjoy a challenge. Cool! I was a vet tech for three years at 183 Animal Hospital and then director of the Irving Humane Society. I'm in Oak Cliff now. My main concern at the moment is how we can catch 'em and then where to move them. I was director of a humane society, animal control officer and vet tech for 10 years and have seen single seemingly healthy animals decimate entire shelters. I took Baby UE to my vet before letting him settle in but I'm still nervous since some things take time to manifest themselves. I'm a blatant waste of time and resources.
