I woke up this morning to find some 15 or so new emails in my donations folder. In less than 10 hours, the $200 needed for the first month has been collected 
I don't think there's any other community where such a small (comparatively) number of members cares so much. Thanks so much

Even though this message was deleted, I figured I'd bring it back so I can explain, since it's a valid (if stupid) question.
Previously, I was paying $150 US a month for a moderate server (p4 3.4ghz with 2gb of ram, 120gb non-redunant hard drive) from 1&1. That money included the rental on the server and the hosting service.
The problem with this was that the server was in NYC and I had no physical access to it. Which means that when it goes down, or there's a problem, I am at the mercy of 1&1 to have it fixed.
I took a poll, and it was decided that the best way to move forward would be to buy our own server. A huge amount of generous donations were collected, and UER is now the proud owner of a new Sun Fire X2200 professional server... two dual-core Opteron 1218 (1.8ghz) chips (that's essentially four processors at 1.8ghz), 2gb of fast ram, and two 250gb SATA2 hard drives in a mirror (full redundancy).
However, just owning a server isn't good enough; you still need to connect it to the internet. This service is called Colocation, and it can get expensive.
I found a colocation provider inside Toronto's prestigious 151 Front Street data center, for $100/month. It's a lot less than we were paying before, and the service will be faster and more reliable.
But there is still a monthly fee. You can't get away from that -- it's impossible. Even if I was to host the server at my home, on my slow connection, I'd still be paying a monthly fee on my internet.

| | | | my experience with having my own server was similar. i was told i would have to buy a business dsl line, etc. and i got some similar price quotes. it's quite expensive to run your own server with your own connection. and that big connection is needed because so many of us are online at the same time and so much info is being run through "the pipes." getting your own server is not always much less expensive, it's just more reliable because the computer is where you can physically access it and reboot it if necessary. it was all too much for me, i gave up the server and went back to a provider.
i agree with av's thoughts. we are a special little community. my one year mark is next week to the day. i am so glad i finally joined up with this site. there are ups and downs, but the information and people you meet and the f*cking massive amounts of photos you can enjoy is very worth it. we like a rowdy little family.
