Fun in St. Louis
< on 3/1/2007 3:21 AM >

Hi, I just recently found out about urban exploration, even though it has been something I have done to some extent in the past (mainly goofing off in the woods near my house). I am planning on going on my first official expedition next week, as I will be coming home from college for a week. I live ~30 minutes to the west of St. Louis, so I know I am near some good stuff.

So, are there any awesome places for a noob to explore in the St. Louis metro area?
Ideally, places where I won't have to worry about getting a cap popped in my butt or attacked by hoboes. Other than the caves I haven't heard too much here about my hometown so anything helps.

Thankies in advance!

Awesome, but other than the stuff on the DB (I checked that before I posted), what is there to see? You don't have to give away any secrets or anything, just point me in the right direction. Other than the library, of course.

I'll definitely be sticking around here; the town I go to college in (Kirksville, MO) is an unusual place with lots of abandoned buildings and paranormal activity, so I'm sure I'll find something post-worthy there. But I don't know too many people in St. Louis who are into this or know even a smidgen of local history, so I'm sort of stuck there.

Have you driven around at all?

There is a lot of stuff down there!!

And if you can't find it there, cross the river to Illinois!!

Come on man, get out there and explore!!!!

Actually, she can't see most of the stuff in the DB since she's not a full member. There's plenty of cool stuff in St. Louis. Dixie is right, I find all kinds of stuff just by driving around.

Hazelwood Interm Storage site. And Malinckrodt Chemical, if the Uranium processing building is still standing. Watch out for cameras and guards. Tell me what's burried on the North side of the airport and you get bonus points and maybe even join the Command.

I drink gasoline for breakfeast and beer for dinner!

East St. Louis is chalk full of sites. Just drive around the poorest areas of the city and you are bound to find something.

Memory_Machine and I both live in STL and are part of a small crew of UERs here. We just explored some really amazing stuff just last night (there is some great stuff around here btw for a fairly small city). We're supposed to have a UESTL meet-up in the near future if we can get our shit together, like a BBQ. Drop me a pm when you get in town.

I'd try down by the riverfront...find the bike path and don't take it--there are some intensely interesting buildings down that way. But, take a friend, or come with us sometime. We're still figuring out the quirks of the area and taking pictures, but most buildings in that area are quite easy to access.

Everyone is always talking about how bad East St. Louis is. The reality is that it is so impoverished that no one really lives there anymore. Ten years ago it was dangerous, but nowadays the north side of St. Louis city is what you really have to worry about.

East St. Louis does look like a warzone, though, which is why some people may still be afraid of it. There isn't one building that isn't rundown. Also, I heard someone make a comment on the forums here awhile back about there being packs of wild dogs roaming the streets. At the time, I laughed because they were making it sound like Eastern Europe or something. Last time I was there, though, I actually encountered a pack of wild dogs. Go figure.

Last weekend in St. Louis was freaking awesome. The brewery caves are phenomenal! Only had time to explore two brewery complexes, but they were both amazing. Drove through East St. Louis with Slim Jim before leaving, and I can say there are a billion places to explore there. You can throw a rock in any direction and hit an amazing abandonment. I will totally be returning someday to do more exploring. Great stuff!

Hahah. No kidding.

Astonishing amount of goods to explore. If only I was around when the City Hospital was still accessible....

NAY, sir!

I came across this thread and wanted to add my bit... I'm new here as well and would be interested in events in STL. I started a thread of my own a week ago, but here I am... should have looked here first.

Anyone is welcome to send me a message.
