Anybody been/going to Locust Point?
< on 2/26/2007 4:18 PM >
Posted on Forum: UER Forum

Every time I drive through Baltimore I am enormously fascinated with the industrial harbor-scape I see. I have read a thread from last year on Locust point (http://www.uer.ca/...urrpage=1&pp#post1) but there was no indication about whether the general interest for this place materialized into an exploration trip.

Anyone taken or planning to take a trip to this section of the commercial harbor (or a similar one)? Of course, I'm not asking for specifics.

And needless to say, if any of you were to plan something like this in the future and were to give me a shout, I'd be delighted to join and contribute my fair share.

The locust point silos have been under demo/construction for many months now... Being converted to condos and such.

The silos pictured in that linked thread are NOT locust point.

THIS is locust point taken over a year ago.

It is a 100% active construction site. I drove by a week or two ago and they were there on the weekend working.

Too many w's.

Andrea--how sad. To think that such a site is going to become a drab little cookie-cutter section of Yuppietown suburbia. Sigh.

I have little problem with the condos in the towers, but the plans for homes at the base are missing a little something. They are standard issue Ryland town homes I hear.

The condos in the towers sounds like a kinda cool idea, but I suppose I am a bit of that yuppie/artsy combo who likes loft appts and apts in old warehouses.

Andrea, the townhouses are just your run of the mill townhouses?

Locust Point, such a shame to see that place go, I remember street racing and other illegal things back in High school..I hear they are doing a lot of demo in order to put up low-income housing. I would really hate to see Baltimore lose some of its "Charm"

low income housing??? That is going to be one of the nicest places to live within the city and far from cheap.

Yeah, I have yet to hear about demo in that area. For low income housing of all things. There are other area's of the city where mass demo is taking place but none of it is for exclusively low income units.

Thats good to hear then, I do not know of the location, just rumors that I had heard from friends, so maybe they are rumors? I don't keep up on the news, so what I hear gets passed down to me.

So andrea, what else is going around here? I take a guess that you know these things before most people?

I grew up in baltimore. And no, I don't mean the suburbs. The past ten years or so have seen low income housing razed in lieu of expensive housing projects, not the other way around. This turnaround is brought about with the idea of bringing life back into the city, not encouraging it's decay.

It has its ups and downs. On one side, we have a brighter, better place to live with eyesores being removed. On the other, we, unfortunately, will see history erased in many cases. I'll never complain when old unused structures are converted for current needs - it's when they start demolishing things for, often quite ugly and cheaply built, "modern" buildings. The other unfortunate thing would be pricing. With most new condo's and lofts going for $300k on the (very) low end, most people who grew up here or at middle income, can't even afford to live here anymore.

So yes, I agree. The condos in the towers - pretty sweet. The homes at the base - boxes with no character or life whatsoever...

As for chr7s... You're going to let construction workers stop you? They don't work around the clock in most cases - at least not until they're nearing the end and they're over schedule and over budget. As for security - almost every site has security. Find a way around it and find a way in... like everyone else here does.
