Paupers Graveyard

This is a repost from another board so accept my apologies if you've already seen it. Its not strictly UE but felt it goes along with the common decaying thread.

So I finally got a chance to get out for a bit this morning. I've been so busy lately with other photography work, everyday job and family that I haven't had much of a chance to do anything for myself.

I had driven by this place quite a few times but you can only catch a glimpse of it from the road. It turns out this place has been quite the hotbed of controversy. The town I live in, where property values are still going up, has alot of new development in and around this place. The neighborhood closest wanted to buy the land and re-locate the graves. The problem with that is, as its a paupers graveyard, there are many, many unmarked graves and the town refuses to allow its move because of the huge liability it could become (moving an unmarked grave is very bad if a family member comes back to visit).

So the builder is essentially building around this place. They even built up a 15' dirt wall around it to hide it from view. The downside of this is it created a very wet area where graves are sinking, rising and pitching. The entire area looks like a construction zone as there is no grass.

My personal viewpoint was one of sadness, not because its a cemetary, but because here lies what's left of peoples lives and its very apparent very few people care to maintain this final resting place. Those without enough money to afford a headstone or burial plot lie here with a "license plate" type of headstone that the living apparently disrespect.

Would really enjoy all feedback you have to offer, good or bad:

1 - A color view of the cemetary. As you can see, its fairly well run down and also used for a pseudo-dump:

2 - A final note...

3 - One of the nicer markers in the yard...

4 -

5 -

6 - The lonely grave...

7 -

8 - This was the oldest stone I could find

9 -

10 -

11 - Vandals had their way with this one. It's sad to think this man put his life on the line for his country and this is how he's repaid.

12 - Lost flowers... not sure whose they were originally but they've been here for a while from the looks of it:

13 -

14 - Mama rose...

15 - These crazy pathways to nowhere were all over the yard. It looks as if at one time they had been tiled. Now the concrete is unlevel and most the tilework is in poweder or chips.

16 - More lost flowers.. the closest grave marker to these flowers was about 100 feet away. Maybe a missing headstone?

17 - My only other color image. Really shows the color and blandness of this place.

18 -

(edit - fixed a typo)

Oops.. I meant to fix that before posting. I was trying something (I took the picture stopped waaaay down and there was too much focus behind the stone which detracted from it) and meant to clean it up afterwards..

Good call.

(update - fixed # 2.. it was indeed awful).

Some of those are the free tombstones that the Military provides to veterans. It is always hard to see a cemetary in such bad shape.

thats just plain disrespectful. Of all the places in a city you would think that a graveyard would hold some importance. This isn't just dead people, it's the town's history. Any town that lets a graveyard become so dilapidated should be ashamed.

My aunt lives across the street from a cemetery that has development around it,the stones (the ones they saved)are now lying flat in cement and they built a kid's park on it. Guess it made them feel better about building around it.

Beautiful pictures, many of those stones don't appear to be that old,I'm surprised that the families aren't speaking up about it.

there should be federal laws against building too close to an existing cemetery.

Really sad place indeed.
All these people seemed to have gone out with such a whimper.
Although, I did notice many June dates on the headstones.
My birth month, how unsettling.
But, getting back to things, we seem to have many of these ghost towns with pioneer cemeteries in my area.
Old, wooden markers that faded with the years, now no one knows who these people were.

That really unfortunate. This is a culture where money comes first even if it destroys what might be the last remanents left from a life now passed and soon to be forgotten. Can't dig'em up just build right over'em
