Finding places when you hike

I just spent a little less than four and a half hours this morning doing a 18.6 mile road march and I didn't realize there was so many neglected and abandoned things right here on post. I have hiked with friends from home before and found small locations but not this many buildings and other objects right in my own back yard. It just proves that sometimes you need to go out and travel different ways to find some cool places, since I have driven around the area and never seen any of this.

Are there any other active outdoors men and women out there that have found locations during their travels?

Sorry no pics from my travels since I was on a time limit but maybe after I'm healed I'll go back out and re-find some of these places.

But there is another kind of evil that we must fear the most,
and that is the indifference of good men.

I have found some interesting things on my hikes, but I tend to find more when I drive down that sketchy looking gravel road that looks like it hasn't been used in ages...

gravel roads around here have led me to some awesome places..the only thing you have to really watch out for is that guy with his shotgun asking if you are the repo person and when you say you aren't he then states to watch out for the spikes in the driveway.

DHAHHAHAHAHAHHAH SOOOO TRUE especially for Loudon County area.... I migrate between Winchester VA and Scranton, PA quite frequently, and i agree with the old ass gravel road, there was an old town off of 50 lemme see i'll try to explain here.

Goto Winchester, Head onto Rt. 50 East, follow it until you hit the sheetz station, hang a left, go down that road for a while, when you hit either a 4way STOP or Stop light, make a right.... you'll go down this road with all these farm estates on the lft and right, then a private school, and then you'll get butterflies in your stomach cuz of hte dips in the road..... just keep following htat and you'll start to notice all the old buildings from colonial times that are all dilapitated..... check them out... theyre real nifty

Just recently I found an abandoned train loading station. A couple silos and one building were still standing. Time before that I found what looked like an abandoned junk yard. It looked like it had been used for that but not anytime recently.

I might of been down there..I'm not sure. My encounter was right outside Ashburn actually and scared the living hell out of me...needless to say I've never ventured down that road again.

You walked 18.5 miles in under three hours? Damn. I can walk 9 miles in three hours tops.

Under three hours no way. I did it in 4 hours and 25 minutes which included over a 10 minute stop to put on some mole skin and change socks. It really wasn't walking it was more like jogging to strutting to limping in.

To pass the event we needed to do it in under 5 hours which is why I really didn't have time to stop and take any pictures. The area was beautiful though and I am sure very few people get to see what we saw.

And I learned one valuable thing when I did it, everything can freeze even snickers bars!

I've found many places. Caves, some that were actually semi-habitable (good for a rest if you've been out a long time), hidden "springs" and waterfalls, and my most favorite... the out of use buildings the water company used to use. They seem to be everywhere, and once you give the door a firm shove, it opens. Voila.

Past the changing phases,
from under sultry gazes---
I will emerge.

I backpack a few hundred miles a year, and I find all kinds of things. Old homes, mines, cemetaries, cars, caves, springs and more. Its always nice to just be strolling along a forest trail and happen upon a cabin from 90 years ago.

I have changed my personal exploring ethics code. From now on it will be: "Take only aimed shots, leave only hobo corpses." Copper scrappers, meth heads and homeless beware. The Jonsered cometh among you, bringing fear and dread.

I find most of my stuff when I go out on my bike. The best places are just random dirt roads, I've found countless abandoned homes like that. The plus side is that the folks don't really mind having a kid on a bike going down their road, where if it was a car, they would go insano, and if you were on foot, they might think you were homeless and were going to try to sleep on their land.
