The more pointers the better

Although I didn't think I would, I am becoming more interested in photography. I can use all the pointers I can get and I am sure many of you will agree. I have taken these pictures at multiple times over the last few days and have posted 2 of them in another thread so I am sorry if you have seen them already.

Most of what I have learned about shooting techniques and composition are from this site. Although friends at home and JC have helped me as well.

The camera I used to take these was a simple cannon point and shoot on a tripod. It can't change exposure length but does allow you to have a longer shutter mode. I am shooting ISO 100 but do have the ability to go as low as 80.

Besides getting a better camera, I want to know how else I can possible improve these shots with my current equipment. I also have not used any post processing.

Sometimes using lesser equipment can be a fun challenge. It forces you to be creative.

1. This is my favorite of the three. The only thing it lacks in my opinion is an even more shallow dof. This is probably a limitation of your camera. Try taking the photo with full zoom, and no zoom. Use foot zoom to keep the frame roughly the same. See how that effects your dof. You can also cheat, and use photoshop...

2. I've never liked photos through dirty glass, but thats just me.

3. This one looks alright to me, it's just a little off center. Not super interesting, perhaps if there were some lights at the end of the tunnel, or something else interesting? Also, it's a simple photograph, and b&w helps emphasize simplicity, might try a conversion.

I hope any of that was useful to you.

1) Cool start, but I'd like it better tilted a little bit.

2) My favorite, a very genuine feeling photo. I'd like it with some more contrast, I think...

3) Boring in all ways and I don't think you can make it any better.

Thanks for your opinions.

cedew: I pretty sure i shot that with no zoom, if I used any it was very little but I didn't try the zoomed in approach. I actually tried to make the photo a tad darker with a option on my camera but besides photoshop I am not sure if I can get more shadows. But I will definitely try to do these ideas in the future.

Glass: I am glad you posted since your light painting has been a huge reason I have become more interested in photography. In the second photo what would you want the contrast to be between? Also I agree on the third but the only other shot I thought was interesting enough to get critiqued has been over done at this location and I wanted to post three shots.

I wanted to post three shots.

I know the feeling; most of my sets are 3 or 6, and damn me if I only have 2 or 5 because critiques comes crashing down on my head. In the second shot I think some shadows might help just because the colors are so muted. Also shadowing your foreground frame more to black would make it less distracting.

I did a quick edit:

This is your strongest image! I'd suggest getting closer to the stamp. Its far too busy at the top of the photo. I understand you probabily couldn't control your depth of field on a simple camera, but just focus in on the stamp and give a hint of paper to see what is going on. Eliminate the rest.

2.

Get closer to the window. U had a good sky their and an interesting watertower. Eliminate the side crap, its detracts.

3.

I dont like it. Crop it a bit more. This way the scale of the image will be less relevant. Feel free to tilt the image until u get it straight. An image like this should be straight as its mostly linear and anything that is a bit off makes it look unfinished and wonky.

Hope that helps.
