Exteriors [w/ an update]...
< on 2/12/2007 8:07 PM >

So i havent really been shooting lately due to the crazy cold weather and my work schedule, but i did take some time to myself a week or two ago and decided to take some exteriors. I realize that exteriors are not interesting to some people, but i am trained as an architect, so they are really interesting to me. Please let me know what you guys think of them. Thanks.

last shot is definitely strongest. 2nd might look better with some cropping so that the stair stepping of the roof goes across the whole frame.

1 and 3 have some great movement with the walkway and the stairs.
The last one is excellent work.

When are we doing something?

Maybe when it is fuckin above freezing for more than 5min. i have been freezing my ass off the past week or so... and now we are supposed to get some snow this week, which i am kinda excited by, i hope the city gets killed, it is really pretty when it looks untouched.

Thanks for the responses everyone...

headon - i think that you might be right, i am going to play around with cropping it a few different ways and see what i like, i will repost when i do it.

I think you are bumping up against the limits of your camera. These are looking way better than the first set you posted asking for critique, but these seem a tad lifeless. If you really want to shoot B&W you should just pick up a cheap film SLR.

Agreed.
However, what he's doing is excellent... So, he could manage to sit on this camera for a while, and then ease into the film world.

As for the snow and the cold, i hope we get slammed, that way i won't have to leave the house(but probably will anyway), and it'll be gorgeous out.
We'll be sure to do something at the latest in the in spring.

what do you guys mean when you say i am bumping into my camera's limits.

i have just recently found out about different ways to turn digital photography into B+W, and ways that you can get more life-like colors. is that what we are talking about here>

or is it that i am just learning how to shoot a fully manual camera?

I just got a Panasonic DMC-FZ7

i got this one because i do not feel like i am really ready for a fully manual yet. i have been using a point and shoot for years... well i learned on a AE1, then moved to digital.

I always say go with an SLR. Point and shoots are for parties and events and such. If you are actually going to take artistic pictures, then I would always suggest going with an dSLR. They all have a full auto mode, so you can use that until you are ready to use the manual mode. The camera you have is very nice, I've used one, but there are still things missing, like no real manual focus, interchangeable lenses, and it has shutter lag.

Yeah i agree that my camera has flaws... especially not having the ability to change lenes... but i think that for now i am going to have to make it work.

unfortunately i am not currently in a situation where i can afford to buy a digitalSLR, i tried really really hard to get one b4 i settled for this model, but it is just not feasible for me at this time. I am secretly hoping that the camera market has leveled out, and that the bodies will continue to fall due to the manufacturers continuing to create better lenes to fit the bodies that they have. I am still fairly new to the world of dSLR, so we will see what happens.

Thanks for the advice. I am glad that some people are seeing improvement. I am really trying to take my time and set up my shots more before i take them. I always took a good amount of time looking at the angles and such, but once i found one i like i would just shoot away, but now i am trying to really take my time and really execute a picture, not a snapshot. And it seems to be helping my composition a little bit to.

Do you still have the AE-1? I'd use that. You're definitely getting better either way though.

The canon is my dads, although he has finally started shooting digital after seeing all the different things that i have done with it.

i know he would never give it to me, but maybe if i went out there and just took it he might not even notice... not for a while anyway...

This is two different buildings actually. the first buildings is on The University of Pennsylvania's campus.

The second is an amazing church that i have been in love with for a few years, and i believe that it is from the 1840's ish... not that sure... am currently trying to do some research.

thanks for the comment.
