Hello, I have looked through the site but, I just got a Nikon D40 I am moving from a Digi P-n-S to a real DSLR was wondering what is the best way to take night photos, I have a few examples with both camera is my online album is interested but they are terrible. Any tips & tricks would be greatly appreciated as I am a n00b in the DSLR world.

Don't do the quick-and-dirty 10th of a second exposure at an ISO of 1600. Get a decent tripod, us a low ISO and do as long an exposure as necessary.

For night shots get a Dslr with Bulb mode and then Buy a remote. But thats only for really dark areas. Plus Dslr let more light in then P&S. I'm not sure how Nikon does with the focusing in Dark Areas. But when I do night shots I put the camera on Manuel Focus and set the lens to Infinity.

3 things
1.Composition
2.Tripod
3.Long exposure

...and just keep shooting. The more you do it the better you'll become.
