DSLR with live LCD preview?

I was Googling this, but decided I could probably get a quicker answer from you guys.

Is Olympus still the only maker with a DSLR that offers live preview? If so, are there any Canon DSLR's planned to have live preview?

I'm pretty sure they are. If you don't mind my asking, why would you want it? Sorry, I've never shot with one before, but I just don't understand the attraction.

yep.

You mean LCD viewfinder? Unlikely you'll see a preview; what would be the point?

... I thought DSLR's couldn't have live preview, being mirrors and shutters and all. It's a feature I've only seen on DSLR-like cameras, ones that fake a shutter sound with a .wav file.

Here's a lockpick. It might be handy if you, the master of unlocking, take it with you.

I've seen a couple out there on the market.

http://maxmax.com/Zigview.htm is one of them.

I think something like this probably has limited use. It might come in handy for low-angle work, but even that seems a bit questionable.

Edit: Sorry, didn't read the initial post properly. Duh.

The Olympus DSLRs that have live preview do it in a rather hacked way. They do it it two ways that the user can select:

1) A second sensor in the viewfinder which is routed to the LCD. Good: Gives a live preview without blocking the viewfinder. Bad: Not a great representative of the final image (focus / DOF / etc).

2) Swinging the mirror up and using the main sensor. Good: Very good representation of the final image. Bad: Delay on taking shots (mirror has to swing twice), no real time AF or metering, blocks the viewfinder.

It's pretty much impossible to have a proper live preview on a DSLR without it ceasing to be a DSLR. Even using a pelical mirror has major disadvantages: You loose about 1/3 to 2/3 of a stop and your viewfinder is dim.

My Sony F828 had it, but W. Rabbit knows as I do, it's got issues. One problem is LCDs that small don't have the resolution necessary for a good focus check.

A full frame like the 5D with a fast lense on it is as good as it gets for DSLRs. It's noticeably better then the 20D's viewfinder image.

The F828 is not an SLR, so a live preview / lcd viewfinder on it is not something special.

Not quite as good as it gets. The 1 series Canons have 100% frame coverage, the 5D only has 96%.

Panasonic makes one as well, although I think it is basically the same camera as the Olympus: http://www.dprevie...es/panasonicdmcl1/

Well... I could see the use for it. Even if I had a DSLR, sometimes I would just want to point and shoot. For us non-shutterbug types like myself, it would be nice to have that safety net for when we don't feel like taking bad pictures.

Anyway, I knew Olympus had one. I was hoping maybe you guys would tell me Canon was coming with one. The lack of one won't stop me from getting a DSLR eventually, but it's a feature I would like to have anyway.

Close enough to get the point. The F828 had a EVF as well. Wanna shoot 1 series? I don't.

With a 30 or 5D you'll want to shot RAWs not Jpegs. If the exposure or white balance is off, it won't matter. Canon DPP makes RAW adjustments easy, and it's non-destructive.

You don't need it. It's totally unnecessary. The viewfinder is much better in every way. I don't understand why you would see it as a safety net.

Canon won't be coming out with this feature, because it has limited appeal.

Well, yeah, you don't really, I guess. But it'd still be nice to have if you ever just wanted to shoot from the hip while walking through a place or something. I'm going to get a DSLR whether Canon ever makes one like that or not, but I would like to have it.

If you want to shot like you did with the Sony, you could get on of these:
