has anyone ever used this? you can select your state and county, and then select "vacant/not in use". it yields fruitful results.

Wow. I like how the Tivoli Brewery is listed as "vacant/not in use". The Tivoli is the student union for Auraria Campus. I practically live there!

It's a great tool, but I've noticed that it's not all that up to date sometimes. There was a monastery in Rochester I was very excited to go explore, and when I got there, it was not in fact vacant. It had been converted into a nursing home and the register had just not been updated.

I laughed to see that Mechanics Hall was listed as vacant, especially since its one of the most active places in Worcester. I looked back at the registry and they added it in 1972!!

I've found it to be a complete waste of time, you'll get more locations by figuring out where "IScrewLittleBoys Children's Hospital" is when people leak the real info to look cool in the following 10 posts anywhere on this site.

Leave only footprints, take only pictures... unless its like really cool.

Not a complete waste of time in the sense that it provides a valuable historical context for thousands of buildings, and is a reflection of many preservationists' hard work. The reason that many of those buildings are now occupied is because of the National Register.

Then again, one of my major work projects is updating a file of registry nominations that haven't been touched since 1974. Sigh.

If you want the good stuff, try searching for buildings with 'endangered' status instead of 'vacant'. Those are updated a bit more frequently as various groups are trying to lobby for funding for upkeep, reuse, etc.

You're still going to need to drive there to find out if its abandoned or not... and um... to explore it.
