Zipper Modification

Something simple can cause you to break your silence. I'm new to UE, which has me pretty cautious all the time, so I think of these things. Zippers clanging around can really be really loud at times, and depending on what you're doing, this could be a very bad thing.
Instead of avoiding wearing/using things with zippers, here's a trick that I discovered just a moment ago that I thought I'd share with everyone. . .
Poster putty. You can find it in the stationary, hardware, or housewares department of most stores, and as far as modifying zippers go, this stuff is great.

STEP 1
Take a chunk of putty, smash it down, and then roll it in your fingers until it's small enough to fit through the hole in the zipper that connects the two pieces together.

STEP 2
Insert the rolled up putty string through the above mentioned hole about halfway, and then twist the putty around the hole - You'll end up with a big glob of this stuff, mostly on the "handle" part of the zipper.

STEP 3
Well, maybe it's not really a step at all. . . Just smooth the glob downward, and you're good to go.

Not only with it keep the handle part of the zipper from banging against the slider, it will hold the handle in place so that it doesn't bang against the teeth of the zipper or anything else.
Best of all, as you've probably guessed, it's really easy and quick to do. Don't worry about removal either, because this stuff wasn't designed to stick to metal - it only sticks to itself, and remains in the form you molded it in (and it's flexible, too).

I'm sure someone else has thought of this, but it doesn't hurt to throw the info out there. Hope this helps someone.

...
Why not just stick a piece of tape over the whole thing so it doesn't rattle?

My first instinct is, as always, sarcasm.... After all jOlt, don't you know that the adhesive in tape has a distinctive smell? Not to mention the 'crinkling' noise it makes in cold temperatures.

On pain of death I might admit that I've actually been troubled before by the clanging of zippers on my pack/boots. Mostly because it makes me jumpy. And not enough that I'd do anything about it. But what can I say... it is kind of annoying.

Exactly. I'm not sure if having quiet zippers does anything other than make myself more comfortable. I imagine a lot of us are like this (namely the people just starting out in UE), so this info may not be that useful, but it was at least worth a post.

As for the flashlight thread, I read it before posting this. I know, I know. . . hehe

EDIT: I won't bump the topic again, I promise : )

To be completely honest I've never had a problem with zippers. I mean how big of a zipper are you using if you need to quiet it down? Perhaps a switch in wardrobe might be inorder if your overladen with such things.

I have been putting a bit of black hockey tape on the zipper so it doesn't make that metallic clinking when I'm trying to quietly move from shadow to shadow... For some of the explorations I do, any tiny noise could be the difference between getting caught and not getting caught.

It requires wisdom to understand wisdom: the music is nothing if the audience is deaf.

Another idea is to replace the zipper pull completely with a piece of sturdy string or fabric tied in place of it. No noise at all and you can make it big enough to grab with gloves or even mittens on... As for quieting the actual 'zip' noise rubbing the stub of an old candle along the length of the zipper will make it quieter as well as lubricating it.

any type of metal on your clothing can be a big problem if absolute silence is necessary. maybe you should just find something else to wear?

I have never encountered clanky zippers unless they were on the side pockets of cargo pants, or similar clothing.

I'm a fan of replacing the metal pull tab on zippers with shoelace string. It's easier to pull and much quieter than the metal clinking of a zipper when moving around.

Unzipping the zipper on my fly always makes tons of noise so I always either wear pants that tie shut or just keep it open when exploring a site.

Edit: it seemed funny when I posted it...

I keep my pants on when I explore, so it hasn't been a problem yet.

That's the solution! EXPOLRE NAKED!!!1!!1!! No pants or shirts to clean after a drain or sewer crawl... No shorts to clean after a particularly unsettling sound right behind you... And hey, if you grease yourself up you can get away from security even if they have the nerve to try and grab a filthy naked guy! And if you're greased you can roll around in leaves and things outside for instant cammo! Unless it's winter... But you'll have other concerns in that case...

What use should it be of to explore in the naked if you are going to explore in the dark anyway? In addition, you may shiver when gettimg cold and rattle your teeth ...
man, there are people who manage to even make squeaky sounds with their armpits!

My suggestion: Use velcro and, when exploring under clandestine conditions, NEVER OPEN ANYTHING! And NEVER say "shit!" if you need something buried deep in a velcro pocket.

Most irritating about reality is that it actually seems to exist.
