Suggestion

I haven't been on these boards too long, but when I do come on I like to read posts with expeditions and photos. Its difficult to examine every different (section of the index - what is the main page called?)

I think it would be useful to have an "expeditions page" where you could read about purely expeditions. I know there is a location database but I still think it would be worthwhile, especially when forums like "world" rarely get used. Lately I just search for "drain" or username "kowalski" to try and find some good stuff, skipping through crap about proximity mines and kevlar vests .

With the current setup do photos and write up's belong in their location (usa, world etc) or in the main catagory?

Just my 2 cents,

UEXplorer

In theory (and I stress that) everything expo-related should end up in the DB, but it doesn't. Dig through there and you will get some pretty good stuff. There is also good stuff of that nature buries in other threads for various reasons. I don't think an expos section would be very helpful since it would be confusing what is supposed to go there and what is supposed to go in the DB.

yeah, in theory the DB was designed so that each "expedition" could be a photo gallery... you write the write-up in the description of the gallery, add individual descriptions to each photo, and post it all in the location that's being discussed.

but there's currently no way to view only "Expedition"-type writeups...

Most good sites don't work that way, though. Max does a freestanding trip report, linking to photos with notations. Ninj does a trip report, with just a few photos interspersed. I tried doing a trip report interwoven with all my pictures on my old site, and it was a mess.

All right I understand. For its purpose, the location database functions magnificently. I guess I'll have to look in the database more. Though I still believe strongly that some of the best photos/write-ups are in threads.

Heres another suggestion for ya then,

When you attempt to recover a lost password the email input box is the same color as the text making it impossible to see without highlighting it.

It's small, but its there!

I'm out,

UEXplorer

EDIT: Or maybe a "most recently added" section to the database so instead of browsing through old data you can get right to the new stuff.

I don't compliment too much but other than what I posted above these boards are really great. Everything is organized, and it loads fast too (unlike uea.ca). I've learned tremendous amounts about flashlights and photography, as well as specific names of specific things.

If everyone posted thier writeups on websites, we'd have an archive of everything, DB or No.

UEM does galleries with conversation/trip log style captions beneath each photo. I think you get a pretty good idea of what each of our trips was like from our galleries. Lately we've also added "Intro" pages with a more expository writeup of the trip just before the traditional gallery.

A good example of this combined approach is our McGill section (http://uem.minimanga.com/occupied/mcgill)

I agree in a sense with UEE's statement. For example, I just realized that there's a lot of good stuff in the "Web update" page. I had previously ignored it because I don't really care about people's websites. But after checking it out it would almost qualify as a "look where I just went" forum instead of the intended purpose.

I got your tour winner right here pussies, at least he'd crash out trying.

Well, the website update section of General UE's purpose is to announce updates to explorer's websites. And what updates happen on a UE website ? New explorations...

No, it isn't. You have installed the google toolbar and left "highlight form fields" on. Open the google toolbar options and disable "Automatically Highlight Fields that Autofill can fill" option under "more", and everything will be good.

I think you all misinterpret what I mean when I say write up.

Here what I call a "write up"
http://www.uer.ca/forum_showthread.asp?fid=1&threadid=4050
It's 90% photos, 10% text.
Here's another
http://www.uer.ca/forum_showthread.asp?fid=1&threadid=3702&currpage=1&pp#post0

Uem's example of McGill has more of a story incorporated, so it is a different style. This may not be a "group UE site" but why not incorporate content that is so incredible to look at? It also stimulates the community and gives them more things to post about. Maybe a viewer can post and let the writer/photographer know what he could do to improve his photos. Or maybe let him know theres a ghost in the background of one

I'm not advocating the expo board anymore I'm just clarifying what I was posting about.

Credit to d-low and kowalski for their "write-ups"

Kind of like the picture gallerys in the LDB? (with summary/writeup at bottum of gallery) Or personal websites?

Jimminy Crickets. Like the LBD, macsbug, exactly! Just people don't post nearly as many comments in the LBD as they do in a thread. Which is better depends on the person and the balance they like. You can't just say one way is better than the other. And less text doesn't mean less explanation, two pictures can be explanations of each other. My original suggestion was more of a place to post a string of pictures with little captions, not a page of text with two pictures, but we already established the location database is the place for that.

I think if I were too put some locations up, I would have pretty detailed LDB writeups, but that is only because I dont have a website up yet, then I would just put in a couple of pics, and a link to my site.

This is all I have contributed to the LDB so far.

Personally, I prefer a lot of good writing, with pictures to illustrate. Some of my favourite UE trip logs are Ninj's. I think he could use a little bit more photography than he currently employs, but I've always loved the story method... after all, it's the same way you'd tell a friend about a place you'd been to... I like that feeling. Photos are cool, but photos without text are just artwork... they may give you the gist of the feel or mood of a place, but they don't give you the nitty gritty detail that makes a really good UE story.

One of the things that Jinx got right in thier book was that sometimes urban explorers forget that the places we explore are as much a product of people as of architecture. What is an abandonned building without a pair of human eyes to see it? If a tree falls in the forest and noone's around to hear it, does it make a sound?

Do we see explorers as simple photographers, or do our explorations in fact have more depth than that?

If a decaying building goes unexplored... is it still beautiful?

What I loved best, since we're doing opinions here, is a site which I can no longer find. It was in the UE WebRing, when you clicked on it, it stated that they didn't know if they'd be going on more missions, but they left the archives of a GREAT exploration of the Helix tunnels. The thing that caught me was the writing. Pictures helped a little, with visualization and such, but the writing was so simple and yet strangely fantastic. I think writing beats pictures, but that site was a wonderful example of how the two can work together. I spent a couple hours scouring that site.

On topic...
