Monday night DRAINS!

Just a little action to wind up a long day. Using my new Point And Shoot (in night and manual modes, with the self timer and my bike as a tripod), so of course they aren't great, but feel free to critique.

I really like the first and last pics. You should photoshop a chopper into the last one, your pose is perfect for it.

oOOH. Yeah, that.

I had no tripod, so I used my bike seat as a stand. I was damn nervous, what with my camera perched on a curved seat, on a bike with no kick-stand, right above the water.

It seemed like a good idea at the time...

The First picture on the 2nd group is cool, but the rest are kinda hard to see and are really just boring. Try to find cool angles or something to make the pictures more interesting!

Thanks. That one is the only one I REALLY like.
I do need the critique, so feel free to sling it.

buy one of those little flex leg mini tripods for a buck, they wont hold an SLR unless you bend the legs just right curved inward, one leg out front to keep the front from tipping, that gets it down low holds my Rebel with kit lense perfectly safe, you can adjust it all over rough ground tree trunks bike seat etc

you gotta have one in your kit man its required explorer gear

There's something about the color here which is lacking. I do like how your on the bike. Perhaps do some more set up shots of yourself with better lighting? (i.e. more flashlights)

ah, I like how you're thinking here. That might make things MUCH better. Last night, I tried taking pictures of just the drain itself and it's features, and it was a no dice. So maybe I do need to invest in some extra cheep flashlights, just to work lighting.

Question though: what sort of lights would be best? It seems to me that halogens would leave those little light circles on the wall, which would make for a crap picture. Or does it balance out in a long exposure?

Move the light source if you're worried. More importantly, try to illuminate as far down the tunnels as possible. This is of course difficult as there's usually nothing close enough to reflect the light back, so you might need to set up some light source in the distance.

I don't think I took any of the drain photos on my site, so I don't have any experience shooting drains, but I know a flash usually won't give good results. At best you end up with uniform illumination that looks unnatural, as if there was some obnoxiously white ambient light down there in the drain. At worst your shot is off center and you get one bright wall a few feet away from the camera and the rest of the shot is dark.
